The INNO-Action! HKBU Academy of Film Seeds Project held a ceremony yesterday (16 December) for its 7th Digital Short Video Competition. A total of 17 awards were presented at the special event to recognise and celebrate the outstanding short dramas and documentaries produced by local secondary school students.

Initiated and developed by the Academy of Film, which is part of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), the competition has been sponsored by Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since its first edition in 2011.

This year's Best Drama Award went to Mok Ka-hei's  A Journey in Winter  from St Joseph's  College. The short drama also won the Best Screenplay Award and Best Cinematography Award. Jimmy Wong Tsz-ming and Jacko Ho from the Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School won the Best Director Award with Mr Daydreamer, which also received the Jury’s Award (Drama) and the Best Actor Award for Nathan Lam Fan-lap. The Special Mention Awards were presented to encourage students to produce films with different topics and styles. Wan Lok-sum's The School from NLSI Lui Kwok Pat Fong College won the Special Mention -- Best Fantasy Award and the Special Mention – Best Creativity Award.

The award presentation ceremony was officiated by Mr Man Shu-sum, Associate Director of the Academy of Film; Miss Loretta Yuen Kit-ling, Principal Consultant of the Efficiency Office, Innovation and Technology Bureau, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Ivan Wong, Managing Director of UA Cinema Circuit Limited; and judges of the 7th Digital Short Video Competition Mr David Lee Kwong-yiu and Ms Mo Lai Yan-chi.

Other guests presenting awards at the ceremony included several veterans from the film and TV industry, namely Mr Henry Poon, Mr Pao Wai-chung, Mr Francis Ko Koon-yuk, Mr Tommy Chan Ying-on, Mr Mak Chun-hung and Mr S K Yeung.

The Seeds Project, which is in its seventh year, attracted more than 1,000 students from over 110 secondary schools to participate in its various activities. The Digital Short Video Competition, one of the highlights of the Seeds Project, received a total of 77 submissions, including 63 dramas and 14 documentaries. An adjudication panel formed by three directors, Mr Au Man-kit, Mr David Lee and Ms Mo Lai, determined the results of the 15 awards, while winners of the remaining two awards, namely Most Popular Online Drama and Most Popular Online Documentary, were selected by the public through an online vote.

A “Meeting with Judges” session was also held immediately after the award ceremony. Judges Mr David Lee, Ms Mo Lai and facilitator Mr Lam Kin-hung, a Senior Lecturer in the HKBU Academy of Film, shared their thoughts on the overall performance of the competition entries. The judges were amazed by the wide range of topics featured, which included personal growth, family, gender, politics and other social issues. While the adjudication panel indulged in an enthusiastic discussion arising from the entries, Mr Lee and Ms Lai also encouraged students to film more and learn from experience.

The 7th Seeds Project will last for about eight months with a range of activities including master classes, a series of workshops, a digital short video competition, and industry and tertiary experiences. For more details, please visit the website at: www.youth.gov.hk/innoaction.
