HKBU violinist Dr Patrick Yim presents Nostalgia

Thursday, 31 Oct 2019

Dr Patrick Yim, violinist and Assistant Professor of the Department of Music at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), will present Nostalgia, a recital with Ms Linda Yim, pianist and the Department's Adjunct Lecturer, on 8 November at the Academic Community Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend this free event.

Nostalgia celebrates the past and inspires a hopeful outlook on the future. The recital includes beloved classics of the violin repertoire by Chinese composers, including Ma Sicong and Chen Gang. Composer and violinist Ma, a pioneer of violin music in China, wrote Nostalgia for violin and piano as part of his Inner Mongolia Suite - the work is at times yearning and optimistic. Chen's Sunshine Over Taskurgan is a virtuoso violin work that features the musical flavours of Central Asia. The work includes a passage in which the composer has the violin imitate the dombra, a traditional Kazak plucked instrument, and it concludes with dazzling pyrotechnics.

The recital will also feature the world premieres of four new works by outstanding Hong Kong composers: Dr Fung Lam, Dr Daniel Lo, Dr Austin Yip (Lecturer of the Department of Music, HKBU), and Dr Angel Lam. The works, which take inspiration from Hong Kong, should leave listeners with a greater sense of belonging and appreciation for Hong Kong.

In her work Mist of Scented Harbour for solo violin, Dr Angel Lam recalls the Hong Kong of her earliest memories. Dr Yim premiered the first two movements in Germany - the final movement Metropolis, an “impressionist sketch on contemporary Hong Kong”, will be premiered at the recital.

Dr Yip's Violin Concerto No. 1, which is to be presented for the first time in an arrangement for violin and piano, takes inspiration from the personalities and lifestyles of various generations of Hong Kongers.
