Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has received a generous donation of HK$4 million from the Hong Kong Panda Education Foundation in support of the University's Chinese medicine research on breast cancer.

In appreciation of the Foundation’s beneficence, a cheque presentation ceremony was held today (17 January). Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Simon Yim, Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Panda Education Foundation; Mrs Joyce Yim, Mr K C Tung and Dr Elaine Tung, Directors of the Foundation; and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. Other HKBU representatives attending the ceremony included Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development); Professor Lyu Aiping, Dean of Chinese Medicine; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.

At the ceremony, Professor Wai expressed his deep gratitude to Mr Yim for his unswerving support of HKBU. He said the donation will enable the University to conduct quality Chinese medicine research on breast cancer, thereby promoting the modernisation and internationalisation of Chinese medicine.

Mr Yim said: "HKBU is the pioneer of Chinese medicine education in Hong Kong. It is also devoted to cutting-edge research, and it has rich experience in providing Chinese medicine clinical services. The HKSAR Government's recent selection of HKBU as the contractor for the service deed of Hong Kong's first Chinese medicine hospital is a testament to its leading role in Hong Kong's development of Chinese medicine."

Mr Yim has always been enthusiastic about the development of education in mainland China and Hong Kong. He actively contributes to the strategic development of HKBU by serving as an Honorary Member of the Court and a member of the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation. The Foundation is a charitable institution co-founded by the Tung and Yim families in 2010. Mr Tung and Mr Yim believe that "education is fundamental to nation-building". They found that there are big gaps in the economic development of different regions in mainland China, and the limited education resources in remote areas may hinder the future development of the country. Therefore, the two families jointly established the Foundation to help and support the development of education in mainland China and Hong Kong.
