HKBU to confer Honorary University Fellowships on six distinguished persons

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has announced the conferment of Honorary University Fellowships on six distinguished persons, namely Dr Terence Chan Ho-wah (陳浩華博士), Ms Winsome Chow (周蕙心女士), Mr David Fong Man-hung (方文雄先生), Mr Lau Pak-shing (劉百成先生), Dr Susie Lum Shun-sui (林崇綏博士) and Mrs Virginia Yim Tsui Yuk-shan (嚴徐玉珊女士), in recognition of their outstanding contributions to a wide variety of areas and their support of society.

Dr Terence Chan Ho-wah

Dr Terence Chan Ho-wah is a prominent entrepreneur and business leader, currently serving as the Chairman of Bay Area Capital Partners Limited. He has a wealth of experience in private equity, real estate and infrastructure assets, as well as listed company merger and acquisition. He also serves as the Independent Non-executive Director of three Hong Kong-listed companies, namely Shanghai Industrial Urban Development Group Limited,  CASH Financial Services Group Limited, and Wang On Properties Limited.

Dr Chan has always committed himself to serving the community. He holds multiple positions, including Vice President and Secretary General of the Federation of Hong Kong-Shanghai Associations; member of the Election Committee of the HKSAR; Vice-Chairman of the Security and Guarding Services Industry Authority, and member of the Witness Protection Review Board under the Security Bureau of the HKSAR Government; and member of the Mainland Opportunities Committee of the Financial Services Development Council. He is also currently Deputy Chairman of the Council at The Education University of Hong Kong, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Real Estate and Construction at The University of Hong Kong, Deputy Chairman of the District Fire Safety Committee (Central & Western District), and Chairman of the Lantau District Junior Police Call Honorary President Council. Having served as a Council and Court Member of HKBU from 2016 to 2021, he is currently an Honorary Court Member of HKBU and the Entrepreneur Committee Member of the HKBU Foundation.

Ms Winsome Chow

Ms Winsome Chow has made significant contributions to the arts, which have helped to revitalise Hong Kong’s artistic landscape. After graduation, she joined the Government to pursue a career in arts administration. As the Assistant Director (Performing Arts) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, she managed 14 performing arts venues and oversaw the operation of performing arts programmes and celebration events. Since becoming the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2015, she strategically revamped the Council’s grant schemes. In addition to promoting cultural exchanges passionately, she set up a scheme to support the arts and cultural sector and spearheaded cross-sector collaboration during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Chow is a member of the Governing Board of the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre, a subsidiary of HKBU, and a member of the Government’s Advisory Committee on Arts Development, the Performing Arts Committee of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and Advisory Committee of The Jockey Club CPS Limited (Tai Kwun). In 2022, she was honoured with the “International Citation of Merit” by the International Society for the Performing Arts in recognition of her dynamic impact on Hong Kong’s arts and cultural sector.

Mr David Fong Man-hung

Mr David Fong Man-hung has achieved remarkable achievements in business while demonstrating generosity towards society. He is the Managing Director of Hip Shing Hong (Holdings) Company Limited (Hip Shing Hong). Since taking the helm of Hip Shing Hong in 2009, he has implemented modern practices and steered the company from strength to strength, branching out in business, residential and hospitality properties.

Mr Fong serves as the Chairman of the Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation and the Fong’s Family Foundation. The Fong’s family has generously backed various initiatives at HKBU over the years, including the research projects of the School of Chinese Medicine, the construction of the Fong Shu Chuen Library on campus, and the pledge to support HKBU in its appointment as the contractor for the service deed of Hong Kong’s first Chinese medicine hospital. Currently, Mr Fong is an Honorary Court Member of HKBU, an Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation, a member of the 14th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee, the Honorary Council Member of the Hong Kong Committee for United Nations Children’s Fund, the Executive Council Member and Trustee of the World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong, as well as the Life Honorary Chairman of The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 2008 and honoured with the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2011 by the HKSAR Government.

Mr Lau Pak-shing

Mr Lau Pak-shing is a distinguished entrepreneur renowned for his impressive business track record. He has accumulated extensive experience in auditing, accounting, corporate finance, cold storage chain logistics and real estate businesses. He is currently an Independent Non-executive Director of CR Construction Company Limited (formerly known as China Resources Construction Company Limited). In his early career, he successfully got a listed company out of the red. Headhunted by the China Resources Group in 1993, Mr Lau has served as the Executive Director and Deputy Managing Director of China Resources Enterprise, Limited, Executive Director of China Resources Land Limited, and Assistant General Manager of the China Resources Group. He has contributed to the company’s strategies and performance with his strong business acumen and effective leadership.

Over the years, Mr Lau has given invaluable support to HKBU through various initiatives and donations that aim to enhance students’ quality of learning. He is an Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation and a member of its Alumni Committee, as well as a patron of the HKBU Century Club. Since 2017, he has served as the Vice-Chairman of the Organising Committee of the HKBU Golf Day.

Dr Susie Lum Shun-sui

Dr Susie Lum Shun-sui has led a distinguished career in the nursing sector. After completing her nursing training in Hong Kong, she became a volunteer for Operation Mobilisation in areas infested by diseases and military conflict. Upon returning to Hong Kong, she began to work at a hospital. When serving as the Chief Manager (Nursing) / Chief Nurse Executive of the Hospital Authority, she was responsible for managing the development of nursing policy and education. She also championed the training and recognition of speciality nurses by founding the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing, and by facilitating the training of specialty nursing in the Mainland.

Dr Lum is the very first nurse-counsellor in Hong Kong. Her dedication and innovative contributions earned her the respect and acclaim of all those she has served. In 2013, she was awarded the truly deserved Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of the Red Cross —the highest international distinction for nurses. In 2014, she set up a healthcare business, the Salubrity Living Wellness Centre, aiming to provide affordable and holistic health assessment, education and management services. Currently, Dr Lum is the Chairperson of the Nursing Education Advisory Committee under the School of Continuing Education at HKBU.

Mrs Virginia Yim Tsui Yuk-shan

Mrs Virginia Yim Tsui Yuk-shan is a passionate philanthropist, community advocate and supporter of education. In the 1980s, Mrs Yim co-founded S.A.S. Electric Company Limited with her husband, Dr Stanley Yim Yuk-lun, developing a successful career as an entrepreneur and devoting herself to service and philanthropy in profound and comprehensive ways. She served as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Yan Chai Hospital from 2017 to 2018 and is currently the Secretary of its Advisory Board. Not only did she raise a substantial amount of resources for the Hospital under her leadership, she launched the “Little Angel Volunteer Group” to nurture a caring heart in young children.

Mrs Yim and her husband remain staunch supporters of HKBU, contributing to various projects including the establishment of the Virginia and Stanley Yim Student Development Fund to finance students’ overseas academic exchange, internship and service-learning activities. They also donate towards the HKBU SEED Fund to extend emergency financial relief to students with urgent needs and towards the  Extended Study Programme in the Greater Bay Area, enabling students to broaden their horizons against the backdrop of rapid growth in the Nation.
