HKBU welcomes appointment of new Council and Court Chairman

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) welcomes the HKSAR Government’s appointment of Dr the Hon Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, BBS, JP (黃英豪) as Chairman of the Council and the Court with effect from 1 January 2025 for a term of three years.

Dr Wong is deeply honoured by the appointment. He said: “HKBU aspires to be a leading liberal arts University in Asia for the world. In recent years, the University has proactively addressed the needs of the development of Hong Kong and the Nation. It has focused on areas of strategic strength to promote transdisciplinary teaching, learning and research with a view to nurturing future-shaping leaders and contributing to society. I am thrilled to collaborate with the University and the HKBU community to strive for the dynamic development of the University.”

Welcoming the appointment, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said: “We are delighted with the appointment of Dr Wong as the new Chairman of the Council and the Court of the University. He is no stranger to the HKBU community as he was a long-serving member of the Council and the Court from 2002 to 2010, and since the establishment of the HKBU Foundation in 2009, he has been serving as a member of its Board of Governors and Chairman since 2018. With his acclaimed public service, corporate governance and professional accomplishments, as well as his visionary insights and rich experience, Dr Wong will undoubtedly lead HKBU to new heights.”

Dr Wong is the Managing Partner of Philip K.H. Wong, Kennedy Y.H. Wong & Co.  He is active in community service, particularly in initiatives concerning youth development. In 2003, he was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World and was appointed to the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. In 2022, he took office as Member of the Legislative Council, representing the Import and Export functional constituency.

Dr Wong is a passionate supporter of HKBU and is currently the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the School of Chinese Medicine. In 2013, he was conferred with the title of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of his significant contributions to HKBU and the community.

The University is also pleased to welcome the appointment of three distinguished members of the community to the Council including Mr Lo Wing-hung, SBS, JP (盧永雄), Publisher and Chief Curator of Bastille Post Ltd; Dr Louis Ng Chi-wa (吳志華), Museum Director of the Hong Kong Palace Museum; and Dr Malina Ngai Man-lin, JP (倪文玲), Group Chief Executive Officer, AS Watson Group; and the reappointment of two serving Council members, Mr Abraham Chan Yu-ling (陳宇齡), Chairman of the PuraPharm Corporation Limited and Dr Wong Yu-yeuk, MH (王如躍), Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner of TCM Lifestyle Clinic.

On behalf of the University community, Professor Wai expressed his heartfelt thanks to the outgoing Chairman of the Council and the Court Dr Clement Chen Cheng-jen, GBS, JP (陳鎮仁). He said: “Since 2019, Dr Chen has shouldered the crucial responsibility of steering the governance of HKBU. Dr Chen’s far-reaching vision and exemplary leadership contributed substantially to the University’s outstanding achievements in education, research, campus development and garnering societal support during the period.”

The University also expresses its appreciation for the support and contributions of Council members Mr Chui Wing-on (徐永安), Ms So Ching, JP (蘇晴) and Ms Wong Wai-ching, GBS, JP (王惠貞), who will complete their terms of service at the end of 2024.
