Brilliant academic and research achievements
 

Dr Ma Guancong (Department of Physics) has won the prestigious Chen Ning Yang Award 2022 for his pioneering investigations into novel Hermitian and non-Hermitian topological phases in wave systems. Dr Ma is one of three awardees in 2022, and the first physicist from a Hong Kong university to receive the Award, which honours young researchers and promotes the development of leaders in physics in the Asia Pacific region.

Professor Ge Liang (Department of Chinese Language and Literature) has won the 8th Lu Xun Literary Prize for his novella Hair Cutting. He is the first-ever writer from Hong Kong to win this award, which is widely recognised as one of the leading Chinese-language literary awards in the world.

Professor Jia Wei (School of Chinese Medicine) and Professor Cai Zongwei (Department of Chemistry) have been elected as a Member and a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea respectively. This prestigious recognition underscores Professor Jia’s exceptional contributions to the field of metabolism and physiology, and Professor Cai’s remarkable achievements in environmental and analytical chemistry.

Eighteen HKBU scholars have received awards from various funding schemes of the Research Grants Council in 2022/23 in recognition of their distinguished research achievements and significant contributions to the higher education sector. They are Dr Chen I-ling (Department of Chinese Language and Literature), Dr Emily Chow-Quesada (Department of English Language and Literature), Dr Paola Colleoni (Academy of Visual Arts), Dr Duan Tianwei (Department of Physics), Dr Denise Fan (Academy of Music), Dr Fung Hong-wang (Department of Social Work), Dr Catherine Ellen Hardie (Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies), Dr Lam Kei-fong (Department of Mathematics), Dr Li Jianfeng (Department of Geography), Dr Li Jun (Department of Journalism), Mr Li Lei (Department of Computer Science), Dr Ma Guancong (Department of Physics), Dr Ma Jing (Department of Computer Science), Dr Man Wai-lun (Department of Chemistry), Dr Jakub Morawski (Academy of Film), Dr Xue Wei (Department of Computer Science), Dr Yu Rongjun (Department of Management) and Dr Emily Zong (Department of Humanities and Creative Writing).

Dr Gao Meng (Department of Geography) has received the Xie Yibing Youth Meteorological Science and Technology Award 2022. He was given the Award for his contributions to the understanding of the interactions between aerosol pollution and weather/climate in Asia at different scales, and improvements in predictions of aerosol pollution. Dr Gao is one of six awardees this year and the first scholar from a Hong Kong university to receive the Award.

Dr Ivan Li (Department of Interactive Media) has been selected as one of the 10 “Rising Stars in Social Computing” by The Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence and was the only awardee from Hong Kong. Dr Li is an expert in trustworthy machine learning, network science, and social computing.

Chung Wing-yiu, a graduate of the Academy of Visual Arts, was selected as one of the 10 winners of the Outstanding Tertiary Student Award of Hong Kong organised by the Hong Kong Youth and Tertiary Students Association. She has created a platform to promote art through art illustrations, and also actively participated in various social services.

Twenty-one students and alumni of the Department of Journalism won a total of 10 awards in the 2022 Campus Newspaper Awards hosted by the China Daily Hong Kong Edition. The number of prizes garnered by members of HKBU was the second highest among the 50 universities from the Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, reflecting their outstanding performance.

Celebrating the best in creativity

Four members of the HKBU community were honoured with the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in recognition of their achievements in arts. Dr Yip Wai-hong, Founding Head of the then Department of Music (now Academy of Music), former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and former Member of the Council, was awarded the Life Achievement Award. Dr Tsang Fan-yu (Department of Chinese Language and Literature) received the Award for Young Artist (Literary Arts). Mr Cheung Fei-fan, alumnus of the then Department of Cinema and Television (now Academy of Film), was named the Artist of the Year (Drama) and Mr Kong Hoi-kan, alumnus of the Academy of Visual Arts, received the Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts).

The creative integrated branding campaigns developed by two interdisciplinary teams of students from the School of Communication won prizes in the student category at the annual Kam Fan Awards organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong. Public Relations and Advertising (PRA) students Parco Lai, Bonnie Yip, Zoey Tsoi and Journalism student Wendy Ng won the Bronze prize, while PRA students Yang Yuhe and Chow Yee-ting, together with Animation and Media Arts Concentration students Chen Beiying and Yang Bingshi, won the Merit prize.

Two alumni of the Academy of Film, Mr Yu Sze-long and Miss Wu Chui-yi, were selected as the winners of the Professional Group and Higher Education Institution Group of the 7th First Feature Film Initiative respectively. They will receive HK$8 million and HK$5 million respectively in funding from the Film Development Fund to implement their winning film projects and produce their first commercial feature films.

Waves of success in sports

Cheung Ka-long (Physical Education and Recreation Management), a member of the Fencing Team of Hong Kong, China, won the bronze medal in the Men’s Individual Foil at the World Cup series held in Paris in February 2023.

Cheung Ka-long (Physical Education and Recreation Management) and Sarah Lee (Creative and Professional Writing), a member of the Cycling Team of Hong Kong, China, received the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Men and Women respectively at the Cathay 2021 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards. At the Cathay 2022 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, Ka-long received the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Men, and he was also crowned the recipient of the Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Men for the second consecutive year.

Student triathlete Wong Tsz-to (Physical Education and Recreation Management) won his second consecutive title in the men’s 10 km race in the 25th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon.

Three HKBU students claimed four gold and two silver medals at the 2022 FISU University World Cup Combat Sports competition. Sat Pak-long and Lau Po-yan (Physical Education and Recreation Management) won two gold medals respectively, while their fellow student Ho Yin-cheng won two silver medals.

The HKBU Athletics Team clinched the championship in the overall men’s category and the second runner-up title in the overall women’s category at the 61st Annual Athletic Meet organised by The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. The HKBU Dragon Boat Team retained the championship title at the “Sunlife Stanley International Dragon Boat Competition 2023”.

Notable alumni

Four eminent alumni – namely Professor Chan Wing-kwong (Chinese Medicine), Mr Cheng Tan-shui (Communication), Professor Leo Poon (Applied Biology) and Mr Patrick Tsang (Accounting) – were awarded the Eighth Distinguished Alumni Award for their outstanding business, professional or scholarly achievements, as well as their immense contributions to the University and society at large.

Miss Cheung Man-yui, a 2019 graduate of the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health, and Miss Yeung Nga-yin, a 2022 graduate of the Academy of Music, have received scholarships from the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme 2022 to pursue their studies at world-renowned universities overseas.
