Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award by The Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries, in recognition of his contributions to foster the reindustrialisation with research and development, and maintain close ties with the industries.
Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School and Acting Dean of School of Chinese Medicine, was named on the list of “Highly Cited Researchers 2023” by Clarivate Analytics, in recognition of his academic publications which have been highly cited by fellow academics in the cross-field of the Web of Science, the world’s eminent citation database. This accolade showcases Professor Lyu’s significant and far-reaching influence in his field of expertise.
Professor Cheung Yiu-ming (Department of Computer Science) was awarded the 2023 Asia Pacific Neural Network Society (APNNS) Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to neuro-computing and related areas. Founded in 1993, APNNS promotes active interactions among researchers, scientists, and industry professionals who are working in neural networks and related fields in the Asia-Pacific region.
Dr Angelo Lo Conte (Academy of Visual Arts) was awarded the prestigious Renaissance Studies Article Prize by the Society for Renaissance Studies for his groundbreaking article titled A Visual Testament by Luca Riva, a Deaf and Mute Pupil of the Procaccini.
The innovative research projects of HKBU scholars took the spotlight at the 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions held from 17 to 21 April 2024, capturing a total of nine awards including one gold medal with Congratulations of the Jury, four silver medals and four bronze medals.
Dr Aik Wei Shen’s (Department of Chemistry) project won the gold medal with Congratulations of the Jury. Projects of Professor Simon Han Quanbin (School of Chinese Medicine), Professor Li Min (School of Chinese Medicine), Dr Sze Cho-wing (Golden Meditech Centre for NeuroRegeneration Sciences) and Professor Xu Jianliang (Department of Computer Science) won the silver medal. Projects of Dr Ken Leung Cham-fai (Department of Chemistry), Dr Zhai Lixiang (Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development), Professor Zhang Hongjie (School of Chinese Medicine) and Dr Zhang Shiping (School of Chinese Medicine) won the bronze medal. Dr Chan Mau-hing (Department of Physics) and his team, in a collaborative project with the Education Bureau, also won a silver medal.
Fifty-four HKBU distinguished scholars were ranked as the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in 2023 by Stanford University, demonstrating the University’s expanding research strength and impact across the world.

The HKBU School of Business was awarded “China’s Top 10 Featured Business Schools” by the MBA Union of China at the 15th China MBA Annual Conference and 2023 Business School Annual Ceremony. Nominated by Mr Fan Jiaqi, Co-Chairman of the Sixth HKBU MBA (China) Alumni Association, the School is recognised for its outstanding performance in education, research, and social services. Dr Monique Wan Shui-ki, Associate Dean of the School of Business and Director of the MBA and MSc Business Management (MScBM) programmes, also received the “Outstanding Business School Leader Award” from the MBA Union of China.

Carman Leung, a student of the Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Public Relations and Advertising, was selected as one of the Top 10 Outstanding Tertiary Students of Hong Kong 2023 by the Hong Kong Youth and Tertiary Students Association.
Five members of the HKBU community were honoured with the 18th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in recognition of their achievements in arts. Professor Ge Liang (Department of Chinese Language and Literature) was honoured as the Artist of the Year (Literary Arts). Dr Gabriel Tsang Fan-yu (Department of Chinese Language and Literature) received the Award for Young Artist (Arts Criticism). Dr Warren Mok, Honorary University Fellow, was bestowed the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts. Dr Herman Yau, Honorary University Fellow and alumnus of the then Department of Communications (now School of Communication), was named Artist of the Year (Film). Mr Ho Cheuk-tin, alumnus of the School of Continuing Education, received the Award for Young Artist.
The cross-media art performance Since When, with texts and lyrics written by Professor Chow Yiu-fai (Department of Humanities and Creative Writing), won the “Best Serious Composition” award at The 21st CASH Golden Sail Music Awards on 6 November 2023.
Two interdisciplinary teams formed by students from the School of Communication were recognised at the HK4As Students’ Award 2023, as part of the annual Kam Fan Awards organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong (HK4As). Advertising and Branding students Yang Sihan and Zhang Wenrui, along with Animation and Media Arts students Zhu Binbin and Zhu Tianchen, were awarded the Bronze and Best of Art awards. Public Relations student Tang Chung-yan, Organisational Communication student Chan Wing-hung, and Advertising and Branding students Julia Yun Cheuk-lam and Cheung Ka-wing, received the Merit award.
Students Cheung Ka-long and Lau Chi-lung (Physical Education and Recreation Management), members of the Fencing Team and Wushu Team of Hong Kong, China respectively, captured two gold and one silver medals at the Chengdu FISU World University Games held from July to August 2023. Ka-long topped the podium in the Men’s Foil Individual event, followed by winning another gold in the Men’s Foil Team event with his teammates, while Chi-lung clinched a silver medal in the Men’s Nanquan event.
HKBU students who were members of the Hong Kong, China Sports Teams delivered exceptional performances at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou in the autumn of 2023, bringing home one gold, two silver and four bronze medals. Cheung Ka-long won the championship in the Men’s Foil Individual event and clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s Foil Team event with his teammates. Windsurfers Ma Kwan-ching and Ngai Wai-yan took silver in the Women’s iQFoil event and Women’s RS:X event respectively. Forrest Shanna Sanman, a member of the Rugby Team, claimed a bronze medal in Women’s Rugby Sevens. Wong Tsz-to, a member of the Triathlon Team, clinched bronze in the Mixed Relay event. Chan Ho-yuen shone at the Asian Para Games by bagging a bronze medal in the Men’s Singles WH2 badminton event. All the medallists are studying in the University’s Bachelor of Physical Education and Recreation Management programme.
Student Cheung Ka-long achieved remarkable results in international fencing competitions, including a bronze medal in the Men’s Team Foil event at the 2023 Fencing World Championships, and a gold medal in the Men’s Individual event at the Grand Prix Foil held in Turin. At the Cathay 2023 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, Ka-long was crowned the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Men five years in a row and Cathay Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Men for the third consecutive year. He also received the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Sports Combination with his teammates.
Lau Chi-lung captured a gold medal in the Men’s Nanquan event and a bronze medal in the Men’s Nandao event at the 16th World Wushu Championships held in November 2023.
Four HKBU students won four bronze medals at the 1st National Student (Youth) Games held in Guangxi in November 2023, namely Lam Yuen-ping, Law Tsz-hin, Yan Nuo (Physical Education and Recreation Management) and Sum Ka-lok (Applied Biology).
HKBU athletes excelled in various collegiate competitions organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China in March 2024. The men’s team secured the first runner-up title in the athletics, basketball and woodball competitions, and the second runner-up title in the badminton, dragon boat, rugby and volleyball competitions. The women’s team clinched the first runner-up title in the basketball, handball and volleyball competitions, and came in third in the dragon boat, fencing, football, karate, rugby and woodball competitions.
HKBU received the Energy Management Grand Award in the “Catering and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises/Non-Governmental Organisations/Educational Institutes” category of the Smart Energy Award 2023, organised by CLP Power Hong Kong Limited. This prestigious recognition acknowledged HKBU’s outstanding performance in innovative energy saving and improving energy efficiency.
The University presented its 9th Distinguished Alumni Award to Mr Chan King-yin (Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health), Ms Lo Koon-lan (Department of History and Geography, Hong Kong Baptist College), Mr Stephen Yau How-boa (Department of Social Work, Hong Kong Baptist College) and Professor Zheng Wanhua (Department of Physics) in recognition of their outstanding business, professional and scholarly achievements, as well as their service and contributions to the University and society.
HKBU alumni Wilson Cheung (Physical Education and Recreation Management) and Ho Yuen-kei (Social Sciences in China Studies) were named among the Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2023 in recognition of their remarkable achievements and contribution to the community.
HKBU Academy of Film alumni were honoured with prestigious awards. Ms Rachel Leung Yung-ting won the “Best Supporting Actress” award with In Broad Daylight at the 17th Asian Film Awards and the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards. Ms Yoyo Tse walked away with the “Best New Performer” award with Fly Me to The Moon in the same year of the Hong Kong Film Awards, while Ms Norris Wong received the “Best Original Film Song” award for her lyrics of the theme song of The Lyricist Wanna Be, which she directed herself.
Miss Cheung Man-yui, a 2019 graduate from the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health; Miss Wong Hiu-ching, a 2021 graduate from the Academy of Music; and Mr Chan Pak-hei and Mr Lo Tsz-to, who graduated in 2023 from the Academy of Music, were awarded scholarships under the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme 2023 in pursuit of their studies at world-renowned universities overseas.
