On 18 March 2025, HKBU proudly held the grand opening ceremony of the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity, a landmark achievement under the University’s Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-2028. Supported by a HK$452 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the new campus at Renfrew Road, Kowloon Tong provides residential accommodation for over 1,700 students. With cutting-edge facilities across creative disciplines and sustainable architectural features, the Campus is poised to become a vital base for creative education, with an emphasis on innovation, collaboration and sustainability. It supports the vision outlined in the National 14th Five-Year Plan to develop Hong Kong into the Hub for Arts and Cultural Exchanges between China and the rest of the World.
HKBU, in partnership with the Airport Authority Hong Kong, held the "Fly Me There" exhibition at the Hong Kong International Airport from 18 December 2024 to 26 February 2025. The exhibition featured a 360-degree 3D interactive LED cinema, which combined digital film, video games, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. It enabled visitors to take a virtual cultural tour at the airport, immersing themselves in more than 40 breathtaking cultural heritage sites in eight Asian countries. "Fly Me There" marked the debut display of a deliverable of the "Future Cinema Systems: Next-Generation Art Technologies" project in a large public venue in Hong Kong.
During the Paris Olympics, HKBU organised the two-day "Journey to Excellence: HKBU in Paris" symposium at the OLY House in Paris on 28 and 29 July 2024, showcasing the University's experience and achievements in utilising technology to assist sports and the multi-dimensional development of athletes. The symposium brought together experts and scholars worldwide for in-depth discussions on issues related to the all-round development of elite athletes and the development of sports science and technology. In addition, HKBU's researchers and student team also highlighted the University’s outstanding academic achievements at the event, as well as the research and practical applications in sports and other innovative fields.
Organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the 2nd International Symposium on Humanities and Culture: Visions of a Digital Future took place on 26 and 27 March 2025 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Supported by the Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation and the Institute of Creativity at HKBU, the symposium brought together scholars and experts from across the globe and from within HKBU to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) from humanistic and societal perspectives.
HKBU featured its latest innovations in utilising technology for sports and arts at the InnoCarnival 2024 held from 26 October to 3 November 2024 at the Hong Kong Science Park. Through a wide range of sports-tech innovations, transdisciplinary art-tech projects and immersive installations, visitors of the HKBU pavilion learned about how human data metrics improve the performance and safety of athletes, and engaged in sports and arts through motion capturing and sensing technologies.
HKBU showcased its innovative, AI-powered art tech projects and the University's leading future cinematic education at the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) 2025, held from 17 to 20 March 2025. Highlights at the HKBU pavilion included the "AI Motion Acting Agent", a system enabling adaptive and expressive motion generation; "DigitalGuardian", an AI technology designed to protect the intellectual property of digital creators; and two immersive virtual reality projects. The HKBU pavilion also introduced eight art tech startups that leverage advanced technologies to transform creative and cultural domains. HKBU scholars also participated in FILMART seminar sessions, sharing insights on AI opportunities and the future of AI in filmmaking.
At the Commencement and Honorary Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony held on 18 November 2024, HKBU conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon five distinguished individuals. Professor Michael Batty, a pioneer in the advanced research and methodology of mapping and visualising cities; Dr Bernard Charnwut Chan, a distinguished leader across multiple sectors; and Dr Yang Yang, an internationally renowned short track speed skater, received the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa. Dr Ronnie C Chan, a highly regarded business leader and philanthropist, was bestowed the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa. Professor Tan Weihong, a molecular scientist, was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.
At the 19th Honorary University Fellowship Conferment Ceremony held on 26 September 2024, HKBU conferred Honorary University Fellowships upon six distinguished persons, namely Dr Terence Chan Ho-wah, Ms Winsome Chow, Mr David Fong Man-hung, Mr Lau Pak-shing, Dr Susie Lum Shun-sui, and Mrs Virginia Yim Tsui Yuk-shan, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to various fields and their steadfast support of society.
At its Annual Gala Concert on 1 April 2025, the HKBU Symphony Orchestra delivered an enchanting performance that uniquely bridged music and brainwave technology. With the use of portable functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) devices, a singular musical experience was created for the audience by capturing the brain activity of the performers and translating these brainwave patterns into fluid images via AI.
On 22 November 2024, renowned novelist Professor Ge Liang was awarded the first prize of HKBU's 10th Dream of the Red Chamber Award for his novel Food is Heaven (《燕食記》). Professor Ge is currently serving as Professor at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at HKBU. He has garnered numerous prestigious accolades for his works, cementing his reputation as a globally celebrated author. The Dream of the Red Chamber Award, held biennially by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, aims to encourage the publication of excellent Chinese novels.
