Sixty esteemed HKBU scholars were ranked as the world's top 2% most-cited scientists in 2024 by Stanford University. This remarkable increase in the number of HKBU scholars on the list underscores the University's growing research excellence and expanding global influence.
Professor Michael Ng Kwok-Po (Faculty of Science) was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2025. He also secured a world ranking of 93 and a national ranking of 4 as a Best Mathematics Scientist, as well as a national ranking of 58 as a Best Computer Scientist by Research.com, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics.
Professor Xu Jianliang (Department of Computer Science) was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for the class of 2025. This recognition honours his extraordinary contributions to mobile data management and trustworthy query processing. His research papers have received over 13,000 citations, a testament to his significant academic influence.
Professor Cheung Yiu-ming (Department of Computer Science) was awarded the prestigious International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) Fellow Award 2024, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the fields of cluster analysis and visual computing, as well as their applications. The IAPR Fellow Award is conferred biennially and a total of 21 new IAPR Fellows were elected worldwide in 2024, with Professor Cheung being the sole recipient from Hong Kong.
Professor Christy Cheung (Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems) was recognised as one of Asia's top 50 women technology leaders at the prestigious Asia Women Tech Leaders Award 2025. This accolade acknowledges her research, academic leadership and unwavering commitment to shaping the digital future, cementing her status as both a pioneering force and an inspirational role model for women in IT across the region.
The fruitful translation of innovative research projects undertaken by scholars at HKBU took centre stage at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva held from 9 to 13 April 2025, capturing a total of nine awards including two Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, three Gold Medals, three Silver Medals and one Bronze Medal.
Professor Bian Zhaoxiang (Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development) and Professor Tan Hor-yue (Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development), and Professor Liao Pan (Department of Biology) received the Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury. Professor Zhao Jun (Department of Biology), Professor Jill Chiu (Department of Biology) and Dr Jenny Ng (Department of Biology), and Professor Matthew Lui (Department of Chemistry) also received Gold Medals.
HKBU achieved remarkable success at the 15th International Invention Fair in the Middle East, held in Kuwait from 16 to 19 February 2025, winning four gold medals in its debut participation. These accolades were secured by Professor Cheung Yiu-ming (Department of Computer Science), Professor Simon Han Quanbin (School of Chinese Medicine), Professor Ken Leung Cham-fai (Department of Chemistry) and Professor Zhao Jun (Department of Biology). Their pioneering research projects underscore the University's research capabilities.
The School of Business received the Higher Education Champion award from LinkedIn Hong Kong, which was presented to Mr Ryan Man (School of Business) at the ceremony. This accolade recognises the School's outstanding efforts and its BBA Programme in advocating e-Learning and nurturing future-ready students through innovative pedagogies. The BBA Programme introduced a new e-Learning graduation requirement, which involves students completing 40 hours on LinkedIn Learning.
Professor Chan Ka-chi (Academy of Visual Arts) and Mr Stanley Kwan, alumnus of the School of Communication, were honoured with the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts) and the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts respectively at the 19th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Professor Chan specialises in the intersection of art and technology, employing computational design, digital reality and robotic installations to explore societal issues. Renowned director Mr Kwan has directed numerous classic films, which have won him the Best Director honours at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards, earning him acclaim in the film industry.
Animation and Media Arts Concentration students of the Academy of Film, Leo Wong Kit-lam and Jordan Lau Ching-nam, together with teammates from other universities, led Team E13 to victory in the Disney Imaginations Hong Kong Design Competition 2025, organised by Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. Outshining nearly 200 teams from Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and overseas, they clinched the championship. Their winning concept is a spaceship powered by anti-gravity engines and clean energy, functioning as both an animal conservation centre and an immersive ecological hotel.
As members of the Hong Kong, China Sports Teams, HKBU athletes shone at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Student athletes Chan Ho-yuen, Cheung Ka-long, Lo Wai-fung and Ma Kwan-ching, and alumna Ms Ho Yuen-kei competed at this top international sports platform, and returned with a total of three gold and one silver medals. Cheung Ka-long claimed gold in the Men's Foil Individual event, successfully securing a gold medal at two consecutive Olympic Games. At the Paralympic Games, Chan Ho-yuen won silver in the Badminton Men's Singles WH2 event, while alumna Ms Ho Yuen-kei clinched the gold medal in the Boccia Women's Individual BC3 event.
Students from HKBU's Physical Education and Recreation Management programme have brought home notable successes on the international sports stage. Student Lau Po-yan claimed gold in the Women's Taolu Nanquan-Nandao Combined event at the World Games Series 2024 Hong Kong, held on 12 and 13 October 2024. Shanna Forrest, a member of the Hong Kong China women's rugby team, celebrated victory with her teammates when they claimed the Melrose Claymores title at the Hong Kong Sevens, staged at the Kai Tak Sports Park from 28 to 30 March 2025.
Fencing star Cheung Ka-long secured bronze in the men's individual foil at the International Fencing Federation Foil Grand Prix in Shanghai on 17 and 18 May 2025.
HKBU athletes excelled in various intercollegiate competitions organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. The HKBU Men's Rugby Team won the championship in the 2024-25 competition, while the women's team achieved the second runner-up title. In addition, the HKBU cross-country team won the gold medal in the women's individual event and the bronze medal in the men's team event.
Six MBA students formed a team and completed the 19th Xuanzang Road Business School Gobi Challenge. The team was awarded the coveted "Shackleton Award", which recognises the members with the highest completion rate. Team leader Guo Binfeng and teammate Yu Anqi clinched three Gold Label Awards and two Bronze Label Awards respectively. The other team members, Lai Yinyin and Qi Jiafeng, each took home a Bronze Label Award, placing the team ninth in the medal rankings.
Two HKBU journalism alumni took the spotlight at the 61st Golden Horse Awards. Chung Suet-ying was crowned the Best Leading Actress for her role Sophie, a young girl with hearing impairment, in the film The Way We Talk, directed by Mr Adam Wong, Associate Professor of Practice of the Academy of Film. Kathy Wong claimed the Best Documentary Short Film Award for her co-directed work Colour Ideology Sampling.mov.
At the 8th Pingyao International Film Festival, one of the top festivals in the Chinese Mainland, two Academy of Film alumni brought home major honours. Chan Wing-ki won the Best Student Short Film Award for her work Game Rule. Wu Boping received the "Most Promising" honour and a post-production grant for his film. These accolades underscore the alumni's outstanding creative and professional calibre on a national platform.
