Two HKBU teams win awards at Hong Kong Creative Drama Festival

Two teams formed by HKBU students won the Honour Award and Excellence Award at the Hong Kong Creative Drama Festival recently. They were invited to perform at the award presentation ceremony held last Saturday (25 May). At the festival, teams formed by students from primary, junior secondary, senior secondary and tertiary institutions performed short plays on assigned topics revolving around the theme Chinese Culture. Each team was given limited time and material for their performance.

Honour Award winners Cheng Man-yuet (Higher Diploma, Year 1), Tang Ya-wei and Wan Ying (Postgraduate study) were assigned to explore the impact of the increasing cases of family-related issues, such as “flash marriage”, “flash divorce” and single-parent families, on the traditional Chinese concept of family values.

Cheng Man-yuet said, “We believed that enjoying the process was far more important than winning the competition. During the performance, we used more obvious body language than dialogue to express the conflict among the family members. We are pleased that the judging panel appreciated our attempt.” She and her team members thought that producing a skit on the assigned topic in limited time was the greatest challenge.

Hong Siu-na, Chan Hoi-yi, Mak Long-him and Chan Tse-chun (Communication, Year 1) won the Excellence Award. They were asked to contrast the relationship between teachers and students in traditional Chinese culture with today’s society in which various extra-curricular and tuition classes have emerged. The team based their play on the Chinese classic Journey to the West.
