Mr. Tang Kim-fai, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physical Education, has proved himself a fit sportsman at the age of 60. Last year, he broke a record and won the gold medal in the 55-year-old group pole vault competition at The 9th Chinese Taipei Master Athletics (CTMA) Championships. This year, he scooped another gold medal in the 60-year-old group pole vault competition at the 2013 Spring CTMA Championships by breaking a record that held for 17 years. His result was 2.81 metres while the first runner-up’s was 2.40 metres. In addition, he snatched a gold medal in the 4x400m relay and a bronze in the 300m hurdles.

Mr. Tang was overjoyed to break a record again in the pole vault competition. Last year, he experienced a failure in an Asian competition because he used a pole that was long and heavy and injured himself during practice. This affected him psychologically, and he could not perform up to standard. This year’s victory gave him a feeling of vindication. Mr. Tang said though he participated in other events, pole vault is his preferred sport.

Mr. Tang will retire at the end of June, but he has been invited to work part-time at the Department of Physical Education to teach Track and Field as well as Physical Fitness programmes. He said having more free time would enable him to go abroad for competitions. This year, he will participate in international competitions in Japan and Taiwan. When he retires fully, he hopes to take part in competitions in distant places such as Brazil.
