HKBU’s Science Open Day offers insights on protecting valuable water resources

The Open Day of the Faculty of Science was held today (3 July). Around 1,100 participants including students from primary and secondary schools and the general public attended the event.

Mr. Wong Chung-leung, Assistant Director (Operations), Water Supplies Department of the HKSAR Government, was invited to speak on the topic “Total Water Management in Hong Kong”. Mr. Keith Kei, Executive Director, Reef Check Foundation (Hong Kong) delivered a speech on “Coral Diversity and Health in Hong Kong”. HKBU scholars, including Professor Jeffrey Cheung from the Department of Physics and Dr. Karen Mak from the Department of Chemistry shared on “Harvesting Energy from the Water Wave” and “Horrible Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO)?!” respectively.

The Science Open Day is part of the Science Festival 2013, which revolves around the theme “Water Resource and Science”. Activities such as talks, exhibitions, games, workshops and laboratory tours were organised to raise participants’ awareness of the importance of water resources and how science and technology can be applied to address the challenges of water management and allocation.

Another highlight of the Festival was a photo contest which encouraged participants to use photography to explore the importance of water resources and ways to protect them.
