Professor Cheah Kok-wai, Head of the Department of Physics, was recently named a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in the UK in recognition of his contribution to research and education. Professor Cheah was nominated by three other fellows of the Institute of Physics.
Professor Cheah said: “I am honoured by the conferment of the Fellowship. Considering that I worked in the industry prior to joining HKBU, the achievements in my research areas have essentially been made at HKBU. I am glad that the University has given me great opportunities and support in undertaking my research.”
Fellowships of the Institute of Physics are awarded through the recommendation of colleagues and other Fellows. It is a prestigious membership granted to people from different sectors who have made a significant contribution to their profession, either through their work or by supporting the development of physics. To be elected as a fellow, the Institute will assess a candidate’s academic contribution in terms of teaching and research. The recognition of research is determined by factors such as h-index and citation number.
Professor Cheah’s research focuses mainly on two areas, organic electronics such as organic LED and organic photodetector, and plasmonic materials and devices which can manipulate light.
