Young farmers scheme kicked off to promote organic farming in local community

Launched with the aim of encouraging organic farming and promoting a green environment in the local community, the scheme “Amway Organic Farming at Primary Schools in 18 Districts” organised by HKBU’s Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre has entered its third year. Teacher and student representatives from the 10 participating schools recently took part in a launch ceremony at the HKBU campus. Under the scheme, over 30,000 participants have benefited from the organic farms built in 32 primary schools in Hong Kong. The young farmers were able to gain new knowledge and to carry out organic farming.

Young farmers are guided by experienced farming tutors through steps including plowing, sowing, removing seedling and watering. The young farmers are then required to perform all these steps on their own to experience farming. “Elite Junior Farmers” will also be chosen from among passionate participants and will then take part in a one-day training camp to learn how to design and lead organic farming activities.

The officiating guests at the kick-off ceremony were Mr. Chan Chi-chiu, Senior Crop Development Officer of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Mrs. Louisa Chan, General Manager of Amway Hong Kong Limited, Professor Ricky Wong, Associate Vice-President of HKBU, and Professor Jonathan Wong, Director of Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre.
