Three students from the School of Business, Miley Liu, Kimberly Lui (Human Resources Management, Year 2) and Zhang Wenning (Accounting, Year 2), formed a team representing HKBU at the KPMG Business Administration Paper 2013 organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Business Students. Their outstanding performance won them the second runner-up prize in the competition with Kimberly adding extra credit to the team by winning the Best Presenter award.
The theme of this year’s competition was “The Business Matchmaker”. Contestants were asked to write a business plan for a feasible and successful joint venture between two specific companies from different industries to maximise profits. The HKBU team was one of the five finalists selected to present their business plan to the panel of judges consisting of experienced elite members of the business sector and scholars in the final round of competition.
Miley and Wenning thanked the two coaches, Ms. Connie Li, Lecturer II of the Department of Marketing, and Mr. Lam Sui-wah, Teaching Consultant of the Department of Management, for their guidance. They said: “It was indeed challenging to prepare a comprehensive financial report based on our business idea which balanced creativity and feasibility. We did lots of research and sought advice from our coaches on every detail of the plan. The award belongs to everyone who helped us and our amazing teammates.”
Kimberly, who won the Best Presenter award, shared her presentation skills, saying there are three things to pay attention to when making a presentation. She said: “First, have a good understanding of the whole piece of work, including the strengths and weakness. Second, pay attention to your body language and attitude. Last but not least, be confident in yourself and everything you have done.”
Every year the competition attracts more than 200 teams from nine local universities and various overseas universities with the aim of fostering the flow of ideas between the academic and business fields, ultimately enhancing participants’ knowledge of the real business environment.
