HKBU Visual Arts work on display at K11 Art Mall

29 Jul 2014

An extension of the graduation exhibition of undergraduate students of the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA), showcasing a selection of work by 23 graduating students, is currently on display at K11 Art Mall, Tsim Sha Tsui. The exhibition enables the young HKBU artists to enhance communication with the general public, thereby promoting art in new contexts.

Professor John Aiken, Director of the Academy of Visual Arts, said, “The opportunity to show a selection of work from the graduation exhibition at K11 relocates familiar work in an unfamiliar context. The quiet, secluded Kai Tak Campus (where AVA’s 2014 graduation exhibition was held) in a generally residential area of East Kowloon contrasts sharply with the upmarket commercial activity of K11 located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.” He thanked K11 for providing the opportunity to re-present a selection of the best work from AVA’s 2014 graduation exhibition. He said, “I believe it will generate new insights for the selected students. It will also give new audiences access to an excellent body of work by some talented young artists at the beginning of their professional careers.”

Workshops and talks have been organised for the general public. A woodcraft workshop was held during which Visual Arts students taught participants how to cut, polish and colour small wooden blocks using simple tools to turn them into wooden decorations. A jewellery workshop will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on 23 August (Saturday) during which participants can learn basic methods of weaving metal wires into different shapes to create their own jewellery. In addition, a talk entitled “Artist Dialogue: Knocking on Heaven’s Door” will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on 9 August (Saturday) during which Professor John Aiken, Director of AVA of HKBU, and Professor Huang Xiaopeng, Mainland artist, will explore the differences in art schools, exhibition spaces and audiences from multiple perspectives.

The exhibition is an extension of the AVA graduation exhibition which was held at Kai Tak Campus last month. It was organised by AVA of HKBU and supported by K11 Art Foundation. The exhibition will be held until 31 August (Sunday).
