HKBU to confer Honorary University Fellowships on five distinguished persons at its 59th Convocation

The University will hold its 59th Convocation on 16 September 2014 (Tuesday). On the occasion, the University will confer Honorary University Fellowships on five distinguished persons in recognition of their outstanding contributions to society and in appreciation of their highly valued support to the University.

The five Honorary University Fellowship recipients are Mr Gan Chee-eng (顏志榮先生), Mr Dickson TY Shang (尚達人先生), Mr Shen Jinkang (沈金康先生), Mrs Mary TM Suen (孫蔡吐媚女士) and Mr Wong Nga-chung (黃雅忠先生).

Mr Gan Chee-eng

Mr Gan Chee-eng was born in Malaysia. He joined Amway in 1993 and engaged in a diversity of posts in manufacturing operations, brand building and general management among others. He was appointed the President of Amway Greater China in 2009. Under Mr Gan's visionary leadership, Amway Greater China has sustained robust and sustainable business growth in the region which makes Amway (China) Co Ltd the largest affiliate of Amway globally. In addition, the Amway factory in Guangzhou, established under Mr Gan's supervision, has become the company's largest manufacturing base outside the United States. Better business practices introduced by Mr Gan at Amway have been recognised throughout the industry and he was awarded the Best Practice Award by Harvard Business Review (China) in 2011.

Mr Gan's business achievements and his efforts towards the social and economic development of diverse communities have earned him numerous honours as well. In 2010, he received the Magnolia Memorial Award from the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. In 2011, he was awarded the title of Most Valuable Manager in China's Direct-selling. In 2012, he was recognised as an Honorary Citizen of Guangzhou for his outstanding contributions to the city. Mr Gan was also presented The Great Wall Friendship Award by the Beijing Government in 2014.

Mr Gan's successful career in business has brought him to philanthropic work. He has been a supporter of HKBU and has made donations in the name of the Amway Development Fund in support of the publishing projects of the HKBU Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology. Taking up the role of Chairman of the Amway Charity Foundation, Mr Gan has promoted children's welfare on the Mainland with a focus on nutrition, educational aid and social integration. In addition, he is also committed to nurturing the future leadership on the Mainland by bringing the leaders of tomorrow into dialogue with better business development and good governance practices regionally, nationally and globally.


Mr Dickson TY Shang

Mr Dickson TY Shang is an alumnus of the School of Business of HKBU. He served in a variety of positions at Hong Kong's finest and most reputable institutions, such as Sun Hung Kai – ACLI Commodities Ltd and HSBC where he was Executive Director of HSBC Broking Services (Asia) Ltd until his retirement in 2011.

Mr Shang has been a steadfast supporter of his alma mater over the years. He served as a Member of the Advisory Committee of HKBU's School of Business and as a Career Mentor and Member of the Advisory Committee on Graduate Employment of the University, participating in the University's activities despite his busy schedule. Since his retirement, he has also served as Adjunct Professor of the School of Business and has been bringing his solid experience in finance and management to class teaching. In addition, Mr Shang has consistently sought to enrich the student life on campus in an effort to nurture the all-round talents of Hong Kong's next generation of leaders. Since September 2011, he has served as Honorary Student Advisor to the Business School Alumni Mentoring Programme of HKBU in which his active engagement with and life-coaching of students has greatly encouraged and inspired them as they strive to develop their potential both in the classroom and beyond as contributors to society.

Apart from being an enthusiastic supporter of HKBU's School of Business, Mr Shang is also a major donor to the University causes and initiatives in general. Since 2013, he has served as an Honorary Member of the University Court and was later appointed Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation. Mr Shang has contributed to vesting the HP Shang Admission Scholarship in the School of Business and to supporting the Finance Students Real Money Investment Fund and the HKBU Development Fund. He also made a donation via the HKBU Century Club in support of the University's Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre. In addition, Mr Shang is also enthusiastic about the University's fundraising initiatives and joined hands with fellow University alumni to initiate the Alumni $100 Donation Campaign.


Mr Shen Jinkang

Mr Shen Jinkang is a renowned cyclist and coach who is well respected in the sports arenas of Hong Kong and the Mainland. Born in Shanghai, he has had a passion for cycling since early childhood and was part of the Shanghai Cycling Team and the National Cycling Team.
  
In 1982, Mr Shen became the Chief Coach of the Shanghai Men's Cycling Team. By applying advanced training techniques and coaching science, he built a very promising cycling team which went on to claim numerous championships in competitions at both the provincial and national levels. In 1985, Mr Shen's outstanding performance won him the position of Chief Coach of the National Men's Cycling Team – the first Chief Coach in the nation's history to take the seat by election and to secure a unanimous vote. He coached the National Women's Cycling Team in 1987, leading both the national men's and women's teams to achieving spectacular results in various competitions.

In 1994, Mr Shen took up the position of Head Coach of the Hong Kong Cycling Team. Under his strong-fist approach to coaching, Mr Shen nurtured many elite young athletes, such as Mr Wong Kam-po, Miss Lee Wai-sze and Miss Wong Wan-yiu, who achieved remarkable results in various international contests. From 2011 to 2012, he was invited to be the Adjunct Coach of the National Cycling Team and helped the team win numerous Olympic medals. Mr Shen nurtures the psychological wellbeing of the athletes while instilling in them sportsmanship, life philosophies and interpersonal skills. This has made him hugely popular among cyclists and has won him great respect in the sports sector of Hong Kong.

Mr Shen has obtained many honours because of his dedication and valuable contributions to the promotion and development of the city's sports. He was awarded the Chief Executive's Commendation for Community Service in 1999 and the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2011 by the HKSAR Government. Since 1995, Mr Shen has been named Coach of the Year six times by the prestigious Hongkong Bank Foundation Coaching Awards. He has previously served as a member of the Elite Sports Committee, Home Affairs Bureau of the HKSAR Government, during which time he provided useful advice on the strategies and policy of the long-term development of sports in Hong Kong.


Mrs Mary TM Suen

Mrs Mary TM Suen was born on the Mainland. She jointly established SML Group Ltd with her husband Dr Simon SM Suen in 1985 and currently serves as a Director of the Group. Under their leadership, the Group is now a leading supplier of total brand identification solutions with a presence in over 30 countries, providing a full range of services to an international clientele comprising top fashion brands and some of the largest retailers in the world as well as high quality products including RFID, EAS, printed paper products, variable data tags and labels, etc.

Mrs Suen spares no effort in promoting charitable and meaningful causes, with special emphasis on children's welfare and the underprivileged. She has rendered service to many charitable organisations and has made donations in support of the long-term sustainable development of the underprivileged with a view to elevating them from poverty. An active participant in community service, Mrs Suen currently serves on the Board of Directors of both Yan Chai Hospital and Yan Chai Hospital Law Chan Chor Si College, and is Director of the Love U All Charitable Foundation, Honorary Vice-President of the Hong Kong Federation of Women, and a member of the Entrepreneurs Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Women. She was also a member of the 57th Term Board of Directors of Pok Oi Hospital and the 30th and 31st Term Board of Directors of Yan Oi Tong.

Mrs Suen understands the importance of cultivating talent for the future and rendered precious support to the education sector. She is a staunch supporter of HKBU's whole person education and its academic and research development. She also actively participated in and generously supported the University's fundraising efforts. She has made a donation to set up the Mr and Mrs Simon Suen Scholarship for Outstanding Students with Dr Simon Suen at the University and to support the School of Business in organising the Human Resources Management Mentoring Programme to provide more chances of placement and vocational training for students in the human resources field. In addition, Mrs Suen also made a donation of HK$30 million towards the founding of the Mr Simon Suen and Mrs Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute to contribute to the promotion of research, academic collaboration and development of Chinese studies and sinology.
  

Mr Wong Nga-chung

Mr Wong Nga-chung is an alumnus of the School of Business of HKBU. A trained and experienced specialist in materials management in the electronics industry, he has been an active and visionary driver of change in his field and has witnessed remarkable changes in the sector over the years. Since 1984, Mr Wong has been the holder of the office of President of Nakagawa Electronics Ltd and Director of Yu King Industrial Ltd.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr Wong has demonstrated an active and sustained loyalty and commitment to his alma mater and the teaching of the young. Since the early 1970s during which he was still an undergraduate student, Mr Wong made a donation to HKBU as a token of appreciation to the University. As the Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation and Patron of the HKBU Century Club, Mr Wong has made numerous donations in support of the University's institutional advancement, including helping to vest scholarships, bursaries and the Finance Students Real Money Investment Fund to support the learning of Hong Kong's future leaders as well as joining hands with fellow University alumni to initiate the Alumni $100 Donation Campaign.

Beyond his contributions to the University, Mr Wong has remained committed to promoting education in Hong Kong and the Mainland. Since the 1990s, he has been helping to fund scholarships to the Chinese YMCA (CYMCASS) Secondary School as well as sponsoring its annual student publication One Hundred Pieces by CYMCASS Students. In addition, Mr Wong has been dedicated in nurturing the young by providing scholarships to students in Guangxi province where he also continues to finance access to university education for talented students from lower-income backgrounds. Mr Wong has also provided financial support for the development of infrastructure projects which will have a significant impact on the economy of Guangxi and the livelihood of its people.
