Brilliance of Civilization lectures share keys to success of two honorary doctorate recipients

The University held two Brilliance of Civilization public lectures last week for honorary doctorate recipients, including a sharing by Dr Johnny To on his journey in the movie and television industry and a sharing session on the achievements of Dr Hui Yin-fat.

Dr Johnnie To, recipient of the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, delivered a public lecture on 19 November. Guests who hosted the session included Mr Wai Ka-fai, a renowned film director and producer, and Mr Thomas Shin, a renowned film critic. During the lecture, several video clips extracted from films with diverse themes, including love, food, money and Hong Kong, produced by Dr To over the years were broadcast. Through the clips, Dr To shared with the audience his journey in the movie and television industry. He said that good movies spring from observations of daily life and caring about people and things. He told aspiring students that the “future” is being decided by every one of them, and their persistence and hard work will pay off in the end.

In the lecture on 20 November, Mrs Pamela Chan, Deputy Chairman of the HKBU Council and Court, Dr Rosanna Wong, Executive Director of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, and Mr Ng Shui-lai, former Chief Executive of Hong Kong Christian Service, discussed the achievements of Dr Hui Yin-fat from the professional, political and personal perspectives. They praised Dr Hui for his commitment to the social welfare sector, in particular his significant contributions to social welfare policy formulation, social services, and social worker education and registration which have helped raise local standards to international best practices. They added that he is deserving of the title “Welfare Hero”. The guest speakers also commended Dr Hui, saying that he is a sincere person who keeps his word and convinces others through reasoning. An outspoken and innovative individual, he has a strong sense of people’s talents and knows how to put these skills to work for a good cause. In addition, several participants shared anecdotes of Dr Hui and lauded him for being an open-minded leader with vision who cares for his colleagues and mentors those entering the profession.
