An exhibition entitled Daniel Says showcasing the works of Chinese calligraphy and seal engraving by Dr Daniel Lau, Associate Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts, and his students are now on display at Koo Ming Kown Exhibition Gallery of the Communication and Visual Arts Building. Most of the works were created by students who enrolled on various Chinese calligraphy and seal engraving courses conducted by Dr Lau.
Dr Lau considers the dialogues between students and their teacher played a pivotal role in the interactive teaching-and-learning process that is characteristic of the courses. The exhibition title Daniel Says is a witty adaptation of the Cantonese name (literally translated as “the teacher says”) given to the popular children’s game Simon Says. Dr Lau’s verbal comments on students’ works have been transformed into the teacher’s calligraphic colophons stamped on students’ works. Featuring the collaborative works jointly finished by the teacher and students, a substantial part of this exhibition emphasises an interactive approach of art-making and a teaching-and-learning philosophy.
The exhibition will be on until 9 May (Saturday).
