The School of Continuing Education (SCE) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS) celebrated the 25th anniversary of their partnership and signed cooperation agreements on 10 June. The agreements included memorandums of understanding to jointly offer UWS’s top-up degree programmes in Hong Kong and to recognise HKBU’s Diploma of College Foundation Studies programme as satisfying the admission requirements of UWS’s Bachelor’s degree programmes, as well as a renewed agreement to offer the Master of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) programme in Hong Kong.

Professor Rick Wong, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said: “Throughout the years of collaboration, we are particularly grateful for UWS’s constant insightful exchange of ideas, as well as their eagerness to bring in new programmes that fit the latest needs of Hong Kong’s nurses. Through the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that we jointly offer, we have proudly nurtured over 4,000 local nursing and healthcare professionals.” Professor Wong believes that the new agreements will reinforce the strategic alliance between the two institutions and lay the foundation for providing articulation possibilities for HKBU’s sub-degree graduates.

Professor Barney Glover, Vice-Chancellor and President of UWS, said the University has taken pride in accomplishing the historical mission of helping to upgrade Hong Kong nurses’ qualification to degree level and continuing to develop their leadership capacity in the healthcare industry or clinical environment through the Master of Primary Healthcare and Master of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) programmes jointly offered with HKBU. He said: “The School of Nursing and Midwifery of UWS is a national leader in the area. The collaboration allows both institutions to capitalise on the expertise and synergy that their academics possess and create.”

Guests attending the ceremony included Mr Paul Tighe, Australian Consul-General to Hong Kong and Macau, HKBU’s Professor Franklin Luk, Vice-President (Academic), Mr Andy Lee, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary, and Dr Simon Wong, Dean of SCE, as well as UWS’s Professor Denise Kirkpatrick, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic), Professor Lan Yi-chen, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), and Professor Rhonda Griffiths, Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

SCE and UWS began to jointly offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Nursing 25 years ago.
