The School of Business conferred an Honorary Professorship on Mr Shih Wing-ching, Founder of Centaline Group and am730, at its Postgraduate Programmes Welcome Banquet cum Conferment of Honorary Professorship on 15 September 2015. The honour was made in recognition of Mr Shih’s outstanding entrepreneurship and achievements in the area of management.
In his welcoming speech, Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice Chancellor, welcomed over 400 new postgraduate students to the HKBU family and quoted the wise words of Martin Luther King Jr to explain the essence of education: “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” He said that one must establish his or her unique character, which should be accorded higher standing than one’s intelligence, and encouraged students to do the right thing and contribute to society.
Mrs Pamela Chan, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court, praised Mr Shih as a champion of entrepreneurship with his distinctive management style, proven by his successes. She also singled out Mr Shih’s advocacy of charity and social responsibility with the establishment of the “Shih Wing Ching Foundation” and am730 Startup Fund.
Mr Shih delivered his acceptance speech on the topic of “Property Right and Its First Time Distribution”. He shared how the economy could be better balanced through the distribution of newly created wealth. Referencing his own company, he elaborated on his idea of “developing through self organising” and “co-evolving based on fair distribution of newly created wealth”. That is, when an employee enjoys a reasonable share of the profit-making, their creativity, productivity and sense of belonging to that company would create a positive impact on the company’s development. Mr Shih said that he hopes these ideas would set a trend for the industry in order to achieve the principle of fair distribution.
