The College of International Education (CIE) launched earlier this year the "Teaching Excellence Award Scheme" to recognise its lecturers with outstanding performance. The inaugural award winners are Dr Sheren Cheng, Senior Lecturer of the Division of Arts and Language, and Dr Popsy Poon, Lecturer of the Division of Applied Sciences.

Dr Sheren Cheng is the course coordinator of the Concentration Studies of Chinese for Professional Purposes. Her researches mainly focus on modern and contemporary Chinese literature, cultural studies as well as literature and film. She believes that by helping students build their confidence, the students will be able to perform even better in the future.

Dr Popsy Poon is the course coordinator of the Concentration Studies of Food Safety and Environmental Health. Her research interests include spectroscopic investigation of chemically modified polysaccharides and antioxidant activities of polyphenol compounds. Dr Poon said she hopes to identify more forums, workshops as well as internship and overseas exchange opportunities for students to broaden their scope of learning.

The Award Selection Panel of the "Teaching Excellence Award Scheme" this year was formed by scholars from different academic areas, including Professor Ricky Wong, Associate Vice-President, Dr Sam Lau, Director of CIE, Dr Eva Wong, Director of Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning, Professor Edwin Chan of the School of Life Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Dr Benjamin Cheng, the teacher representative & Senior Lecturer of CIE. Awardees were selected based on their teaching performance, curriculum development and their effort in enhancing students' learning experience.
