HKBU kicks off 60th Anniversary celebrations at Health Festival promoting healthy living

11 Jan 2016

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the University and to promote the notion of healthy living, HKBU organised an opening ceremony and Health Festival last Saturday (9 January 2016) on campus. The Festival revolving around the theme “health” aims to share with community members the University’s research and expertise in various areas including Chinese medicine, physical health, science and music. Through a series of workshops, health talks, games and activities, the event attracted around 4,500 participants.

The officiating guests of the 60th Anniversary Opening Ceremony included Dr Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, HKSAR Government, Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of HKBU Council and Court, Deputy Chairman Mrs Pamela Chan, Treasurer Mrs Doreen Chan, Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, Professor Frank Fu, Chairman of HKBU 60th Anniversary Co-ordinating Committee and Mr William Leung, Chairman of HKBU 60th Anniversary Organising Committee on Special Events.

In his remarks, Dr Ko Wing-man said that starting a series of 60th Anniversary celebrations with the Health Festival is meaningful since HKBU can share with members of the University community and citizens health knowledge while celebrating this milestone. Dr Ko encouraged adults and children to do more exercise to achieve a well-balanced life.

Mr Cheng Yan-kee said HKBU’s 60th Anniversary celebrations are being carried out under the theme of Whole Person Education for a Better World which complements the principle that has guided the University since its founding. Apart from the Health Festival, Mr Cheng gave an overview of a series of celebratory activities and community projects to be held throughout this year. All activities will showcase the concerted efforts of HKBU to deliver whole person education, achieve academic excellence and extend care to the community, as well as the achievements and contributions of the University.

In his vote of thanks, Professor Roland Chin said the 60th Anniversary celebratory events are aimed at uniting members of the HKBU family, further enhancing understanding of HKBU by the wider community, and serving the community. Professor Chin expressed his sincere gratitude to members of the committees of the 60th Anniversary who contributed to the coordination of the celebratory events.

At the ceremony, around 300 participants including the officiating guests, former and current HKBU presidents, students, staff and alumni created a huge human formation of the 60th anniversary logo

The activities of the Festival were grouped into four health zones, namely, Health Tips zone, Healthy Living zone, Sports and Fitness zone, and Chinese Medicine zone. They covered areas of food choices, exercise and healthy living. Activity highlights included Chinese medicine consultation and booths offering health tips, organic products and eco-craft making sessions. There were also workshops on family laughter yoga, thera-band exercise, Chinese calligraphy, and more. In light of the upcoming Hong Kong Marathon, talks were held to provide the audience with tips for running and avoiding common exercise mistakes.

The Health Festival was also informative. The participants were able to get various health tips based on the 24 solar terms of the Chinese lunar calendar from a collection of 24 souvenir postcards. The demonstrations of a smart organic home were shown to help them embark on a path towards organic living. Moreover, a children’s art corner and an eco-craft making corner housed under two large-scale marquees enabled parents and their children to draw and create art crafts together.

In addition, the School of Chinese Medicine provided free Chinese medicine consultation at its clinics located at Kowloon Tong, Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay on Saturday. For each patient who received free Chinese medicine consultation, two bags of herbal medicine were also given for free.
