18 Mar 2016

The University held the 60th Anniversary Founders’ Day Reception yesterday (17 March) which provided a good opportunity to update supporters, alumni and donors on the development of HKBU. Around 400 guests including government officials, Consuls General, HKBU’s Council and Court members, HKBU Foundation members, Honorary doctorate and fellowship recipients, donors, alumni, staff and students attended the event.

Officiating at the Reception were Mr Carlson Tong Ka-shing, Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC); Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Secretary for Transport and Housing of the HKSAR Government; Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU; Deputy Chairman Mrs Pamela Chan; Treasurer Mrs Doreen Chan and Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU.

In his remarks, Mr Carlson Tong said that over the years HKBU has nurtured a number of alumni who are prime leaders of society. He recognises HKBU’s strategic direction is to become a leading international research-intensive liberal arts university. He looks forward to seeing more contributions from HKBU towards the development of Hong Kong.

Mr Cheng Yan-kee gave an overview of a series of HKBU’s 60th anniversary celebratory events which aim to showcase the University’s achievements and strengths to members of the HKBU community and the public.

He said that despite the dramatic transformation in the scale and academic advancement of HKBU over the past six decades, the University remains committed to promoting “whole person education” and goes beyond providing its graduates with the qualities that are crucial to Hong Kong’s success in the past and the future. The University would build on the foundations of its success to make the next 60 years productive, successful and uplifting.

Mr Cheng highlighted three major re-inventions that HKBU had undergone in the past 60 years and which have made the University’s story truly remarkable: they were the transformation of the curriculum to one that is global and broad-based; attainment of university status that brought HKBU to be in close association with the UGC, which has acted as a crucial driver for the rapid progress HKBU has made; and the shift to a teaching cum research university where students learn at the cutting edge of research in their chosen fields.

Professor Roland Chin said that education is student-centric and should focus on learning. He said HKBU nurtures each student as a whole person who contributes to social progress and these characteristics are fully exemplified by the five distinguished alumni award recipients.

On the same occasion, HKBU presented the third Distinguished Alumni Award to five outstanding alumni in recognition of their remarkable contribution. They are Dr Dennis Au Cheuk-wing, Mr Chan Hung, Ms May Chan Suk-mei, Mr Ronald Chiu Ying-chun and Dr Liu Chak-wan.

In addition, Mr Cheng and Professor Chin presented HKBU Foundation certificates to five major donors to acknowledge their contributions in support of the long-term development of the University.
