Computer Science students win two awards in Student Supercomputer Challenge 2016

The HKBU students design their own supercomputing system

 

A team of five Computer Science students competed with 175 teams from around the world in the “Student Supercomputer Challenge 2016 (ASC16)” and made the top 16, receiving the First Class Award. In addition, the HKBU team won the Most Popular Team Award at the Challenge for getting the highest number of votes on social media WeChat.

 

Led by Dr Chu Xiaowen, Associate Professor of Computer Science, the team comprised Year 4 students Xu Pengfei, Ting Hoshing, Cheng Guanlun, Du Jiangyang and Year 3 student Ho Chun-san. The finals required competing teams to design their own supercomputing system within technical constraints and apply it to six frontier scientific and engineering projects. The HKBU team was ranked second place on the LINPACK application test with an impressive 10.3 teraflops (a measure of a computer’s speed).

 

Ho Chun-san thanked Dr Chu and the Department of Computer Science for providing support to their team. He said the team had learnt a lot about High Performance Computing and Deep Neural Network as well as strategies adopted by participating teams from around the world. He was impressed by the result and considered it a valuable opportunity for learning and broadening horizons.

 

The Student Supercomputer Challenge is the largest supercomputing contest in the world. After preliminary matches lasting two months, only 16 teams were selected to compete in the finals held in Wuhan, China from 18 to 22 April 2016. This year, 175 teams from 148 universities worldwide participated in the Challenge.
