HKBU student wins bronze in The Consumer Rights Reporting Awards

Lau Ka-ho (Broadcast Journalism, year 3) won the Bronze award in the Campus category of the 16th Consumer Rights Reporting Awards with his three-minute documentary “Signboards that list unapproved professional qualifications in Chinese medicine violate ordinance”.

Ka-ho was excited about winning the award which serves as a valuable recognition of his standard of professional knowledge and skill. The idea for the award-winning report was developed from his day-to-day life; he found that only three professional qualifications in Chinese Medicine are officially approved in Hong Kong, namely General Practitioner, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, and Orthopedics. Chinese medicine practitioners may be violating the rules of professional conduct by stating qualifications that have not been validated by relevant authorities. To complete the report, he applied what he has learnt at HKBU; not only did he carry out regular practices, such as conducting research and interviews, he also carried out sting operations.   

Ka-ho sincerely thanked the Department of Journalism for its support and expressed his gratitude to Mr Bruce Lui, Senior Lecturer of the Department, who provided him with constructive advice, such as how to maintain a fair and objective stance in the report.   

The Consumer Rights Reporting Awards, organised by the Consumer Council in association with the Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Hong Kong Press Photographers Association, has grown in scale and is considered an authority in recognising journalistic professionalism and excellence. A panel comprising 11 distinguished judges drawn from the participating professional organisations, academia and members of the Consumer Council were given the arduous task of adjudicating.
