The Department of Geography hosted the 8th East Asian Regional Conference in Alternative Geography from 6 to 8 December to discuss the topic “Radicalism in Theory and Practice”. The conference attracted more than 100 participants not only from East Asia but also India, Singapore, Britain, USA, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Greece, Australia, Canada and Turkey.
The three keynote speakers of the conference were: urban geographer Dr Andy Merrifield, economist Dr Dic Lo and cultural studies scholar Dr Law Wing-sang. They spoke respectively on issue of radicalism from the perspectives of the discipline of Geography, the China New Left and Hong Kong.
To place the overseas participants in the context of Hong Kong, five field visits were organised, including trips to brownfield sites in the New Territories, the sites of the 2014 occupy movement, high-density Sham Shui Po, the industrial space in Kwun Tong and urban renewal sites in To Kwa Wan.
Professor Adrian Bailey, Dean of Social Sciences and Chair Professor of Geography, noted in his welcoming address that Hong Kong, as a place that is constantly changing, is a good venue for this conference and he encouraged participants to interact with Hong Kong people during the field visits.
