European Union Academic Programme holds Asia Pacific Model European Union

The European Union Academic Programme Hong Kong holds the third edition of the Asia Pacific Model European Union

The European Union Academic Programme Hong Kong of HKBU and the National Centre for Research on Europe of the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, jointly held the third edition of the Asia Pacific Model European Union (APMEU). A total of 18 participants from seven universities in the region joined the simulation. The HKBU delegation, comprising Karla Ng (Government and International Studies, Year 3) and Iverson Ng (Graduate of International Journalism) won the Best Delegation title. 

 

The topic for this year’s simulation was the Future of Europe, based on the ideas put forward in The White Paper 2017: The Future of Europe. Delegations played the roles of nine EU member states, namely Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, Malta, Austria, Sweden and Greece. In the “meeting”, most of the states prioritised the refugee crisis in Europe and put the migration issue at the top of their agendas.  

 

The intensity of the negotiations escalated after the announcement of a scenario involving an assault on French president-elect Emmanuel Macron. The “heads of states” and “foreign ministers” contributed to the dialogue, seeking to enhance scrutiny and monitoring measures of the cyber security system within the digital single market strategy. Participants managed to react swiftly to the news and eventually reached a consensus.
