The University recently received a donation of HK$2.5 million from the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association for the establishment of the “Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Admission Scholarship Scheme for Outstanding South and South East Asian Ethnic Minority Students”. The Scheme encourages and supports outstanding ethnic minority students in Hong Kong in pursuing their undergraduate studies at HKBU.

In recognition of the Association’s generosity, the University held a launching ceremony yesterday (26 June) for the Scholarship Scheme. Officiating at the ceremony were Chairman of the Executive Committee of Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Mr So Chung-ping, Chairman of the HKBU Council and the Court Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of the HKBU Foundation Dr Wilfred Wong, and Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) Dr Albert Chau.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Albert Chau said that HKBU is committed to the pursuit of equal opportunities and seeks to nurture a culture of diversity, inclusiveness and mutual respect. Accordingly, the University will launch the “Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Admission Scholarship Scheme for Outstanding South and South East Asian Ethnic Minority Students”, the first of its kind among local universities. The Scheme encourages and supports outstanding local ethnic minority students in pursuing their studies without the burden of financial concerns, enabling them to achieve their full potential and thereby make a positive contribution to the community.

Dr Chau expressed his gratitude to the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association for its staunch support and care for the University over the years. In addition to serving in the capacity of Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation and supporting the establishment of the “Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Scholarship”, the Association has also backed the “Service Learning Student Activities Fund” as well as the development of the School of Chinese Medicine.

The “Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Admission Scholarship Scheme for Outstanding South and South East Asian Ethnic Minority Students” will be launched starting from the 2017-18 academic year. Under the scheme, full-tuition scholarships will be awarded to five outstanding students annually. Selected students will be provided with an additional allowance to enable them to engage in overseas exchange programmes during their undergraduate years. In addition, they will have the opportunity to serve as cultural ambassadors to promote a diversified culture both on campus and in the community. Applicants are required to be a permanent Hong Kong resident and have at least one parent with an ethnic heritage from South or Southeast Asian countries, including India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines, among others.
