Physical Education students win bronze medal in Asian fencing competition

30 Jun 2017

Low Ho-tin and Cyrus Chang, year 2 students of Physical Education and Recreation Management, gained the bronze medal representing Hong Kong in the Asian Fencing Championships 2017 held at Asia Expo.

This was not the first time that a Hong Kong team has won a bronze medal in fencing but Ho-tin said he was satisfied with the result as the competition was full of challenges. He said the performance of the Hong Kong team was not good enough last year to enable the team to gain an advantage in the seeding this year. They had to compete and beat a number of strong players to enter the semi-final and win the bronze medal.

This was the first time that Ho-tin had competed in his home town, which added to the pressure on him. However, when he heard participants shouting his name or “Hong Kong add oil” in Cantonese, his mood changed. He felt uplifted and the pressure became a source of encouragement, motivating him to play even harder. Ho-tin said it was a valuable experience for him as he learned how to adjust his attitude while playing during competition. He hopes to take part in more competitions in Hong Kong so he can have more opportunities to promote sports here.
