The Department of History, Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, and Mr. Simon Suen and Mrs. Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute jointly organised the “Sharing from Distinguished Scholars in History and Literature” lecture series on 26 June. Distinguished scholars came together in four lectures to share their academic research experience and insights. The event attracted nearly 400 headcounts of attendees, including overseas scholars who attended online.
Professor Robin Yates and Professor Grace Fong from the McGill University in Canada, and Professor Martin Huang from the University of California Irvine in the US delivered three lectures respectively for the series. Professor Yates explored the types, origins, practical applications and basic concepts of legislation through historical sources; Professor Fong introduced the data and functions of “The Ming Qing Women’s Writing Digital Archive and Database”; and Professor Huang shared on the topic “Celebrating the Death of a Daughter: The Glory and Agony of the Father of a Chastity Martyr in Early Qing China”.
Professor Clara Ho, Head of the Department of History, hosted a conference where Professor Lu Weijing of the University of California San Diego, Professor Li Guotong of the California State University Long Beach, and Professor Wu Yulian of the Michigan State University in the US, all former students of Professor Susan Mann, a renowned scholar in Chinese gender history, shared their joyful memories with Professor Mann.
