HKBU’s computer science programming team has clinched the Gold Award at the Asia Macau Regional Contest of the 2023 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) on 19 November. The triumphant team comprised Mohammad Riasad Huq and Arsen Avkhadievm, second-year students of the BSc (Hons) Programme in Computer Science, as well as Zhao Yunxiang, PhD student in Computer Science.

During the demanding five-hour contest, the team demonstrated exceptional problem-solving abilities by successfully tackling six complex algorithmic programming problems. They achieved an impressive 8th position among 82 participating teams, becoming one of the top 10% of the teams awarded the gold medal. They had rigorous preparation for the contest and their performance demonstrated not only logical and analytical thinking, but also an effective application of their in-depth understanding of algorithms and mathematics.

Dr Xin Huang, the team's coach and Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science, expressed his profound appreciation and commendation towards these junior students. “Their extraordinary talent has landed them in the top 10% of the contest, a remarkable achievement that is sure to inspire their peers,” he said.

ICPC is the world’s largest and most attended contest of its kind, often referred to as the "Olympic Games" of the IT world. In the 2023-2024 season, ICPC Asia-East Continent is scheduled to organise seven regional competitions in the mainland.
