The Department of History partnered with “Walk in Hong Kong”, an organisation providing in-depth local tours, with the support of the Office of Student Affairs, and provided a service-learning opportunity for 60 students enrolled in the General Education course “Historic Landmarks, Heritage and Community”.
They were tasked to produce six videos in groups for the Kowloon City guided tours, featuring respectively the history and significance of the six major landmarks in the Kowloon City, namely the Stone Houses Family Garden, Hau Wong Temple, Kowloon Walled City, Guangzhou Veranda, Sung Wong Toi, and Sheung Tai Temple. The videos have been uploaded to YouTube for public viewing.
Dr Fan Wing-chung, Senior Lecturer of the Department of History who teaches the course, said, “The course aims to provide ample opportunities for students to engage in community services. Through taking part in service-learning activities initiated by the community partner, the students deepen their understanding of Hong Kong’s important historical landmarks and their precious cultural significance.
