Five BUers honoured with Hong Kong Arts Development Awards

Five BUers were honoured with the 18th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in recognition of their achievements in arts.

Professor Ge Liang, Professor of the Chinese Language and Literature, was honoured as the Artist of the Year (Literary Arts). He published his first short story collection, Try to Remember, in 2006, followed by works including Food is Heaven, Paper Hawk, Scarlet Bird, The Barber, Hidden Spirit, and Seven Voices. In 2008, he received the Award for Young Artist in Literary Arts from the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards. In 2022, his novel The Barber won the Lu Xun Literary Prize.

Dr Gabrial Tsang Fan-yu, Assistant Professor of the Chinese Language and Literature, received the Award for Young Artist (Arts Criticism). He was the recipient of the Award for Young Artist (Literary Arts) at the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards. He has joined the Society for Hong Kong Studies and the Hong Kong Film Critics Society in recent years. He publishes his literary works and film critiques in publications including Fleurs des Lettres, The News Lens, and Paratext. He is also on the judging panel of the Youth Literary Awards.

Dr Warren Mok, Honorary University Fellow, was bestowed the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts. He is a world famous tenor singer and has been hailed as one of the “China’s Three Tenors”. He founded Opera Hong Kong in 2003 to promote opera and nurture new musical talents.

Dr Herman Yau, Honorary University Fellow and alumnus, was named Artist of the Year (Film). Dr Yau has directed over 80 films. In his early years, he was involved in founding the biweekly magazines Movie and Scene Magazine. In 2010, he published his personal work Cultural Contemplations and Practice of a Film Director. In 2018, he won Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Shock Wave.

Mr Ho Cheuk-tin, alumnus, received the Award for Young Artist. He directed his first feature film The Sparring Partner, in 2022, which won him the Award for Best New Director at both the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards and Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Annual Award in 2022. The following year, he completed his second film Over My Dead Body
