Computer science graduates emerge triumphant with three awards at innovation IT project competition

Two recent graduates from the Department of Computer Science achieved outstanding results at the “Cross-strait with Hong Kong and Macau University Students’ Innovation IT Project Competition 2024” held in Macau in July.

Martas the Atom Gautam won the “First Prize for Undergraduate Students”. He was also the sole recipient of the special prize “Best Practical Value Award”. His winning project “Transformer-Based Reverse Transliteration Model for Nepali Language” features the development of a tool that can accurately convert Romanized Nepali text into the traditional Nepali script. The project was supervised by Dr Yang Liu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science.

Ruiqi Zhuang also clinched the “First Prize for Undergraduate Students” with his project titled “AI for Drug Synergy Prediction”, featuring a systemic approach to enhance the accuracy of drug synergy prediction models. His supervisor was Professor William Kwok-wai Cheung, Associate Vice-President (Undergraduate Programmes), Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and Director of Centre of Health Informatics at HKBU.

Organised by the Computer Education Research Association of Chinese Universities, this competition attracts tens of thousands of students from more than 250 tertiary institutions to participate each year. The Internet Professional Association is the co-organiser of the Hong Kong region.
