The Faculty of Science hosted its annual flagship event, the “Science Festival 2024: Waste-Free Future”, on campus on 5 July, attracting over 700 secondary school students and teachers. Sponsored by the HKBU Century Club, it aims to spark public curiosity, inspire exploration of the wonders of science and highlight the importance of waste management for achieving a waste-free future.

A highlight of the festival was the Waste-Free Science Competition. A total of 115 secondary school students formed teams to complete various tasks, including workshops, quiz challenges and a video pitch. The competition allowed students to unleash their innovative thinking and problem-solving skills, and raise awareness about waste reduction.

The workshops were organised by the five departments in the Faculty of Science. The Department of Chemistry hosted the “Minimising Food Waste through Food Analysis” workshop where students learned to analyse the nutritional value of discarded food products. The Department of Mathematics organised the “Become a Waste Bag Saving Expert” workshop, teaching students how to efficiently pack rubbish into different-sized designated waste bags.

The festival also included experiment demonstrations, exhibitions and game booths. The Department of Biology showcased to participants the conversion of municipal organic waste into biofuel and biopolymers whereas the Department of Physics presented the IoT in smart waste management. The event also featured the “BSc in Computer Science Graduation Exhibition” and game booths on the “GreenLink - Environmental Education Support Programme”.
