The award ceremony for the “A Legacy Across Lingnan: Jao Tsung-I in the Greater Bay Area” student competition took place on 30 November at HKBU. Approximately 70 entries were received, involving a total of 130 teachers and students from Hong Kong and Macau. The submissions showcased Professor Jao Tsung-i’s remarkable contributions across various regions of the Greater Bay Area from multiple perspectives.

Officiating at the ceremony were Professor Lee Chack-fan, Director of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong; Ms Angeline Yiu, Permanent President of the Jao Studies Foundation; Dr Simon Suen and Mr Alberto Lei, Founding President and President of Friends of Jao Tsung-i Petite Ecole Limited respectively; and Mr Paul Pang, Dean of Students of The University of Macau. HKBU representatives included Professor Martin Wong, Provost; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Professor Timothy Wong, Director of the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy; and Professor Chen Zhi, Director of Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology.

The competition featured two categories: dissertation submissions and creative artistic works. HKBU student Zhang Zixuan won the first prize in the higher age-group of the dissertation category. His essay focused on Professor Jao’s poetry collection Changzhou Ji, which is meticulously structured and insightful, delving deeply into the significant features of Professor Jao’s poetry. Co-organised by the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at HKBU, the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong, and The University of Macau, the competition aims to foster students’ understanding of traditional Chinese culture and Jao studies, while also enhancing opportunities for educational, cultural and artistic exchanges in the Greater Bay Area.
