The AI x HK OpenCup 2024, hosted by the Department of Computer Science and supported by the technology company NVIDIA, was successfully held on 6 July. The event attracted over 100 participants. Students from different secondary schools grouped into 20 teams to compete for seven awards.

The contest served as an innovation-enriched platform that fostered the growth of young talents in addressing global challenges through AI technology solutions. Coming to its third edition, this year’s event took the form of a one-day bootcamp featuring a series of learning workshops and competitions. The participating students had the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, as well as its impact and applications.

This year's champion, hailing from Po Leung Kuk Wu Chung College, was awarded a cash prize of HKD 10,000. Aligned with the goal of leveraging AI technologies to address the pressing challenges in Hong Kong, this year’s OpenCup introduced a new award, the “Merit Award for Sustainable Development”.  The team from Diocesan Girls' School garnered this award for their project proposal "Combating Food Waste", which involved using a generative AI model to connect restaurants with local food banks, so as to optimise food redistribution.
