Professor Cherian George, Professor of the Department of Journalism specialised in media studies, has been awarded the Asia Communication Award by the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC). He is the first Hong Kong-based academic to receive this honour

AMIC recognised the outstanding achievements of Professor George in journalism, academia, communication and media research, and socio-political advocacy. His work was described as demonstrating excellence, integrity, and a deep understanding of the Asian context.

The award presentation ceremony took place at the Communication University of China in Beijing. AMIC also commended Professor George's prior career as a journalist in Singapore and his ongoing commitment to the profession across the region through the establishment of the Asia Journalism Fellowship programme, which has provided training to over 230 journalists from 21 Asian countries and territories.

Established in 1971, AMIC stands as a prominent regional network dedicated to media and communication research. Among its co-founders was Professor Timothy Yu, who was the founding head the then Department of Communication (now known as the School of Communication).
