HKBU once again participated in the annual Hong Kong Flower Show organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, showcasing eight penjing (Chinese bonsai) masterpieces from its Man Lung Garden collection. Among the exquisite displays were “Pinus Thunbergii (Black Pine)”, “Rock growing Fortunella hindsii (Hong Kong Kumquat)” and “Podocarpus macrophyllus (Buddhist Pine)”, which attracted many visitors to linger and appreciate.
The Garden has been presenting its exhibits at the Show for nearly 20 years, with the aim of preserving and promoting the traditional art of penjing. Its penjings have garnered widespread recognition and various accolades.
In 2000, HKBU received a HK$2 million donation from the late Dr Wu Yee-sun, founder of Wing Lung Bank, who was internationally acclaimed as the “Sage of Penjing” for his mastery of Chinese bonsai. This donation facilitated the inception of the Wu Yee Sun Penjing Foundation Fund, which is dedicated to promoting penjing as an art form and supporting the establishment of the Man Lung Garden on the Ho Sin Hang Campus. Over the years, the Garden’s penjing collection has been enriched through contributions from generous donors and organisations, including Dr Wu Yee-sun, Sha Tin Bonsai Association, Hong Kong Bonsai International Society, Mr Lui Shu-ying, Mr Zuo Biu and Mr Fan Sheung-tak.
This year, the Show was held at Victoria Park from 14 to 23 March under the theme “Ablaze with Glory”, featuring Cosmos as the theme flower.
