HKBU multimedia artist and communications alumnus clinch Hong Kong Arts Development Awards

In recognition of their achievements, Professor Chan Ka-chi, Assistant Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts, and Mr Stanley Kwan Kam-pang, alumnus of the then Department of Communications, have been honoured with the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts) and Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts respectively in the 19th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Professor Chan Ka-chi is a multimedia artist, researcher and educator who navigates the intersection of art and technology, excelling in computational design, digital reality and robotic installations to expand moving images. By reinterpreting social data, he recreates and explores societal issues. In 2019, he received the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence to pursue a master’s degree in Interactive Architecture at The Royal College of Art and University College London. An Assistant Professor at HKBU, he encourages students to balance technology and creativity, nurturing the next generation of artists.

A renowned Hong Kong film director, Mr Stanley Kwan Kam-pang is celebrated for his films with a delicate female perspective. In 1976, he joined TVB’s artiste training class before transitioning to behind-the-scenes work. In 1985, he directed his debut film, Women, marking the beginning of a distinguished career. Rouge, often considered his masterpiece, won Best Director and Best Film at the 1989 Hong Kong Film Awards, while Lan Yu (2001) earned him the Golden Horse Award for Best Director. In recent years, Kwan has served as a producer for young filmmakers across Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He also teaches film and screenwriting at the City University of Hong Kong. In 2024, he chaired the Project Pitches jury at the 14th Beijing International Film Festival, contributing to the legacy of cinema.
