The Yuzhen Jinsheng Yayue Orchestra, comprising students from Beijing Normal – Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), performed at the second stop of the “Jade Melody and Bronze Chime” world tour at HKBU on 19 October, in celebration of BNBU’s 20th anniversary. The performance attracted an audience of over 700, including students and staff from HKBU and BNBU, distinguished guests and members of the community, who experienced a captivating musical feast together.
The Orchestra performed using ancient musical instruments, such as bianzhong, goudiao, and jiangu, which were meticulously reconstructed at the original scale based on artifacts excavated from the Nanyue King Palace Museum. Centred on court music, the performance integrated ritual, music and dance, presenting both the solemnity of ceremonial music and the elegance of festive banquets. This immersive experience allowed the audience to deeply appreciate the cultural spirit and historical depth embedded within Yayue.
Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU, said that BNBU is an important partner of HKBU, and that this world tour showcased the beauty of Yayue, promoting the outstanding Chinese traditional culture on the international stage.
Professor Chen Zhi, President of BNBU, stated in his speech that returning to HKBU for this performance not only bridges tradition and modernity, the campus and the world, but also embodies cultural exchange and collaborative development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
