A team of five second-year transdisciplinary undergraduates from HKBU was honoured with the third prize at the national finals of “The 19th National Challenge Cup Competition” held at Nanjing University in early November for their project “Eye Mirror”, a portable at-home vision testing device.
The award-winning team members Tang Canyu, Feng Hoi-lam, Wu Guo, Wong Hei-wang, and Kwok Tak-ming were nominated by the Career Centre of the Office of Student Affairs. “Eye Mirror” is a smart home vision-testing device which integrates visual acuity testing, monitoring, eye-care training, and app synchronisation functions. The team combines transdisciplinary knowledge spanning arts, science, and engineering, transforming academic exploration into practical technology and earning recognition from the judging panel. Earlier, the team won the "Start-up Saturday" entrepreneurship competition organised by the Career Centre, receiving seed funding and incubation support.
The Competition was co-hosted by the organisations including the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and the China Association for Science and Technology, with the Hong Kong New Generation and Cultural Association serving as the Hong Kong organiser. The event attracted over 3 million students from more than 2,700 higher education institutions across the Chinese Mainland, with more than 400,000 entries submitted. Eleven teams from Hong Kong advanced to the national finals and the Hong Kong regional award ceremony was held on 13 December.
