The Unit for Students with Special Educational Needs of the Office of Student Affairs organised a Barrier-free Cultural Tour of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 5 to 9 January, bringing together 21 participants including teaching staff, Inclusion Student Ambassadors, Mental Health First Aid Captains, and students with special educational needs (SEN) for cultural immersion.
Highlights of the tour included a cooking class featuring Malaysian cuisine, where participants learned to prepare traditional dishes and collaborated on a shared meal; a visit to the iconic Batu Caves to explore its vibrant temple complex and cultural heritage; and an inclusive workshop in Dialogue in the Dark, where participants completed everyday tasks in complete darkness to deepen empathy and awareness of accessibility.
The tour fostered peer connections and strengthened staff-student relationships outside the classroom. Students with SEN explored the new environment with confidence and support, while their peers and HKBU staff gained a deeper understanding of accessibility and inclusive practices. Insights from the tour will beyond a doubt enrich the University’s ongoing efforts in inclusive teaching and student support.
