Tang Canyu, a second-year student of the Individualised Major programme, has been named the “Bay Area Top 10 Hong Kong Creative Youth” for leading the pioneering development of two socially-oriented technological innovations, “Eye Mirror” and “Guardian Cloud Crutch”. He is the only student from a Hong Kong higher education institution to receive this prestigious honour.
“Eye Mirror” is a smart home-based vision assessment device that addresses the growing problem of myopia among teenagers and the lack of convenient, standardised vision screening tools for families. By integrating time-of-flight distance sensing, voice interaction, and an equivalent focal length algorithm, it enables the automatic adjustment of vision test charts for home use, helping families establish long-term, scientific vision health management.
“Guardian Cloud Crutch” is an assistive mobility product for the elderly, designed to prevent high-risk falls, disorientation and delayed emergency response. It integrates BeiDou satellite positioning, fall detection, voice navigation, and cloud-based alert technologies, while retaining the stability and ease of use of a traditional cane. This helps elderly users maintain independent mobility.
Canyu expressed that the award recognises his efforts and encourages ongoing reflection on the societal impact of technological innovation. He aims to deepen his expertise in artificial intelligence and engineering design and develop more technology solutions that benefit society. Canyu is currently a member of the House of Scholars, an elite student scheme launched by the Office of Student Affairs.
The “Bay Area Top 10 Hong Kong Creative Youth” is organised by Youth Power of Qing Yuan, the Hong Kong CPPCC Youth Association, and the Youth of Guangzhou and Hong Kong Association. The awards ceremony was held on 24 January in Haizhu District, Guangzhou.
