Journalism students sweep awards at news competitions

Students from the Department of Journalism at the School of Communication have achieved outstanding results in two major news competitions, underscoring the Department’s commitment to journalism education and its strong emphasis on students’ practical training and professional practice.

At the 2025 Campus News Awards organised by the China Daily (Hong Kong Edition), 14 journalism students and alumni won a total of eight awards, including two Winners, two First Runners-up, three Second Runners-up, and one Merit award. The standout achievement was in the Best Photo Essay category, where students secured the Winner, First Runner-up, and Second Runner-up titles.

In addition to these accomplishments, awards were received in categories including Best News Reporting, Best Tech News Reporting, Best Business News Reporting, Best News Page Design, and Best Innovative Applications Reporting. HKBU was also conferred the “Most Active Participation Award”.

Further recognition followed at the 25th Consumer Rights Reporting Awards, organised by the Consumer Council. The practicum platform San Po Yan of the Chinese Journalism Concentration was accorded a Merit award in the Tertiary Student Journalism Award category. The winning report, written by Kelly Li, Celeste Tsang, and Hazel Fu, examined the challenges facing the development of eldercare technology products in Hong Kong.
