Professor Kingsley Ng Siu-king, Associate Professor, and Ms Angel Hui Hoi-kiu, part-time Lecturer of the Academy of Visual Arts and HKBU alumna, after going through a rigorous evaluation process, have been selected from more than 200 nominations as the only two artists representing Hong Kong at the Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. This underscores HKBU’s leading strength and international influence in the field of creative arts.

This year’s Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will run from 9 May to 22 November at Campo della Tana, Castello 2126, 30122, Venice, Italy. The Hong Kong exhibition, “Fermata: Hong Kong in Venice”, is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), and jointly organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the HKADC. Miss Rosanna Law, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Government of the HKSAR, visited the Hong Kong Exhibition and met with Professor Ng and Ms Hui in Venice on 6 May.

With the theme “Fermata”, the Hong Kong exhibition centres on capturing the poetic rhythms of everyday life. Drawing inspiration from the fermata symbol in sheet music, which signifies a note or rest to be prolonged at the performer’s discretion, the curatorial concept resonates with the Biennale’s overarching theme this year, “In Minor Keys”. Both artists are adept at transforming daily life into an artistic language. Through medium such as light, sound and installation, they present five works that reinterpret the rhythms and aesthetics of life, inviting visitors on a journey of self-discovery within the flux of the everyday.

Professor Ng’s works include a light and shadow piece depicting the common scene of laundry hanging out to dry, leading visitors to pause and appreciate the tenderness of transient moments amid the rush of city life. Ms Hui presents two works themed around “windows” and “plastic bags”, guiding visitors towards often-dismissed objects and beings, as well as unveiling the subtle, underlying pulses of urban life.

Established in 1895, the International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia is the world’s oldest international exhibition of contemporary visual arts. Each edition features around 100 countries and regions participating through national pavilions or collateral events. Since 2001, the HKADC has participated through a collateral event to promote Hong Kong’s arts development and foster cultural exchange on the global stage.
