Science Festival 2026 inspires secondary school students to build a sustainable future

The Faculty of Science (SCI) hosted the Science Festival 2026 with the theme “Science for Sustainability” on 7 July. The event attracted about 700 secondary school students and teachers participating in a series of exciting activities organised by the five departments of SCI, including workshops, scientific demonstrations, guided tours of laboratories, and an exhibition.  

During the half-day event, students were able to immerse themselves in the deep-sea world through a VR experience that brings this hidden world to life. They also learned how different types of plastics can be separated based on their distinguishing properties, built a beginner-friendly AI eco-assistant that helps people make greener everyday choices, stepped into the shoes of a route planner reimagined for a sustainable era, and gained a tangible understanding of energy conservation and conversion in one of today’s most promising technologies.

Dr Marianna Tsang, Patron and Past President/Ex-officio Director of the HKBU Century Club, and Professor Michael Ng, Dean of Science of HKBU, presented the awards to the winners at the Awards Ceremony cum Sharing Session of the Sustainability Stars SciTech Challenge. A key highlight of the day, the competition engaged about 100 contestants divided into teams of five to harness the power of science and technology to tackle challenges. To compete, they unleashed their creativity by proposing innovative solutions to a sustainability challenge via a video pitch, participating in sustainable SciTech workshops, and completing quiz challenges.
