In the 2025/26 academic year, more than 180 HKBU students participated in the Community Engagement Organisers: Elderly Empowerment Programme, co-organised by the Leadership Qualities Centre of the Office of Student Affairs and the Providence Foundation. The students provided support and services to a total of 638 seniors in Chai Wan, Shek Kip Mei, and Wong Tai Sin.
The programme aims to strengthen social connections and improve the quality of life for seniors through community engagement and home improvements, while nurturing student volunteers’ empathy, leadership skills and sense of social responsibility. Students worked in teams to visit frail seniors regularly and completed 105 tailored home improvement solutions. These included applying anti-slip coatings to bathroom floors, purchasing anti-slip products and household appliances, and arranging home maintenance services to enhance their living environment. Students also delivered 539 thematic care packs to seniors.
To encourage seniors to experience the joy of positive ageing and lifelong learning, a diverse array of experiential learning workshops and social events was organised for seniors to join alongside students, covering fitness, preserved flowers crafts, aromatherapy and Chinese medicine. The programme also drew on on-campus resources to enrich the senior participants’ life experiences and cultural literacy, including workshops on mobile phone and internet use led by members of the House of Scholars of the Office of Student Affairs, as well as attendance at a performance by the Yuzhen Jinsheng YaYue Orchestra of BNBU during the Hong Kong stop of its world tour themed “Jade Melody and Bronze Chime”.
Su Tsz-yuen, a student from the Faculty of Science participating in the programme, said that the programme created support networks for strengthening the connection between youth and elderly, enabling students to turn empathy into action. She believed that the programme boosted seniors’ independence and joy through hands-on home fixes and community engagement.
The programme is now recruiting student volunteers to continue connecting with seniors and extending care and various forms of support through community events and home improvements. Please click here for programme details.
