HKBU held a recognition ceremony on 23 October to express its deep gratitude to alumnus Mr Ben Lam Tsz-pan, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of The Horus Consultant, and his wife Ms Jade Lam Wai-han, for their generous donation to establish the “Oneness Foundation Fund”. The Fund aims to set up scholarships that encourage and support HKBU students in pursuing academic excellence and cultivating social responsibility.
During the recognition ceremony, Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU, together with Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary General of the HKBU Foundation, presented a memento to alumnus Mr Ben Lam and Ms Jade Lam, as well as their son, Mr George Lam, in appreciation of their benevolence.
In his speech, Mr Lam shared the Indian poet and thinker Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s ‘Agency Approach’ theory, pointing out that human well-being cannot be judged solely by material and economic indicators.
“The main purpose of the Oneness Foundation Fund is to foster students’ ‘agency’, i.e., their motivation and capability to pursue value-driven lives and translate those values into social action,” he said.
Concluding with Tagore’s philosophy, he warmly encouraged the audience, “Live your life as a light, because you don’t know, who by thy light, out of the darkness”.
The ceremony was well-attended by distinguished guests, including Dr Jeff Sze Chun Fai, Under Secretary for Education of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr Lew Mon-hung, retired National Committee Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Mr Chan Kai-wai, Mr Chris Cheung Mei-hung, and Mr Alex Lam Chun-ka, Sai Kung District Councillors. Other HKBU representatives included Dr Rosa Tang, Deputy Director of Student Affairs and Professor Baldwin Wong, Assistant Professor of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.
Mr Lam, a graduate from the Department of Journalism at the School of Communication and former recipient of the prestigious “Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators”, has been a steadfast supporter of his alma mater. Since 2016, he has established the “Intellectual Scholarship for Outstanding Performance” to support communication students. The newly established “Oneness Foundation Fund” represents a major milestone in his ongoing commitment to his alma mater.
